2007 S80 Remote Trunk Open - Fail

Tried to use the remote to open my wife's trunk this morning and no joy. Remote will lock unlock doors and trunk, but it won't automatically pop the trunk up. It used to do it as recently as a week ago. Any thoughts as to what may be going on here? My first impression is the trunk lid seemed a little heavy when I did open it suggesting to me the struts may be tired. Will the trunk not automatically pop open if the trunk struts are shot?

Also, got a "position indicator" lamp out message. Mechanic says it is from the front driver side side marker. He says the bulb appears to be good, but the socket doesn't seem to be getting power. Is this a common occurrence?
