I had my 2003 S60 2.4T at the dealer to have my fuel pump replaced. As I drove away my CEL came on and I drove back to the dealer and they said the leak detection pump was bad. Could this have happened as a result of the fuel pump replacement? Do I really need a leak detection pump? Any thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks,
Finn

They should at least verify no wiring or hoses were disturbed.
You have to have it or look at the ck eng light on all the time. If they do emissions inspections it will not pass w/o a working pump.

They offered to fix it for $253.00 which is, by all accounts a good deal. They had it on a lift so I guess they verified that it was bad. We don't have emissions tests here in Nebraska. Do you think I could ever find a used one? Thanks for your comments.

There is a software upgrade that needs to be done if you get code volvo's ECM-433C or generic P2402(both are for bad ldp), before the pump is replaced.
The ecm uses current draw to test the pump. As these pumps age, the current draw increases (even though the pump is fine), turning the CEL light on. Volvo came out with a TSB 2 years ago about software upgrade, to change the methodology of how the ecm tests the ldp, pressure/air flow vs current draw. Apparently, there was lot of premature ldp failures under warranty, and volvo decided to upgrade the software, rather than replace all those pumps.
After the software upgrade, a leak diagnostic test is done, if the ldp fails the test after the upgrade, them the pump is indeed defective and needs replacement..

Not to hijack the thread, but i have a similar issue with an 06 S60. The cel is on and I don't recall the exact code, but the description was leak diagnostic pump faulty. I'm in KY and there is no emissions testing; other than the annoying light is there any downside to running the car this way? I have a couple of parts cars and intend on swapping the part, but between the weather and laziness I haven't got it done. Thanks for the help..

No downside whatsoever except the light is on. It is strictly for checking for tank vapor loss and does not have an engine power reduction response when the fault is detected.
