1999 V70 XC AWD starter replacement

Post by brunocerous »

I decided to tackle starter removal in the 1999 V70 XC AWD I picked up for its third row, but I seem to be stuck on gaining access around the turbo inlet (?) pipe that runs under the intake manifold. I tried removing the fan assembly, then the fan itself, but I can't get either out with the hard plastic pipe jutting toward the front of the car.

I can't see how to remove (what I believe is the) the turbo inlet pipe, since it runs far underneath the manifold toward the passenger side.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's a tight fit, but it should come out with enough wiggling and pushing the manifold inlet pipe towards the rear of the car. The pipe is attached to the electronic throttle body by a single hose clamp. In some cases, the hose clamp may be accessible with a long screwdriver and you can remove the pipe that way.

I would also remove the yellow ATF dipstick for extra room and to prevent breaking it off. The pipe has a bit of flex to it, so the fan should come out with enough wiggling.

Thanks, that's good to know! I'll try again in the morning.

Yep, just take it slow, and be methodical in making sure nothing is snagged and you should be successful. The fan should be all you need to take out, and you may have noticed that you only have to remove the top two screws, while the bottom two can simply be loosened a bit.

It is tight, but I find if you can loosen the clamp on the ETM for the inlet pipe it allows you to move it backward enough to get the cooling fan assembly out with a bit of a squeeze.

Get that fan out of the way. Top two screws have to come out, the bottom two just need to be loosened. Replace them all with cheapie SS from Lowes once you have to the fan out. Don't let the Swedish Header Intake Throttle hit the fan, of course

I also had some trouble with this. Even when trying to remove the fan only, separate from its shroud, the turbo pipe was too much in the way. But I found that with the fan detached from the shroud, the shroud could easily be lifted out of the car leaving plenty of space to remove the fan afterwards and give access to the starter..

Thanks for the post, Rocbar.

In all this excitement , I’m not sure we have documented the easy order of removal of turbo starter work

1 fight the top screws out of the fan shroud

2 slacken the bottom two screws a few turns

3 pop the fan up but do not remove yes

4 relieve various wiring clips amd harnesses

5 remove two screws at the top of the fan shroud

6 fan shroud up and out

7 fan up and out

CheapSS screws at lowes are much better replacements that the stock mild steel Torx. Everything rusts fast in radiator heat
