Engine crash

So my 2012 S60 with 93K miles just an engine crash -- serpentine belt broke and apparently got sucked into the timing belt, which caused the valves and cylinders to crash. Dealers says that it would cost $7,800 to repair, Volvo only willing to "contribute" $2,000.

It sucks to have a newer car with this problem. Sorry to hear it.

If it were serviced by dealers and they didn't catch the bad tracking while engine running it would be somewhat their error, however they can only see 10% of the belt's area upon visual inspection with engine off.

You may be better off with a used engine and an indie repairer to fit it, financially speaking.

Is that a new engine Volvo propose to fit?

?..I didn't know the timing belt is exposed. I have a 2012 s60t5. Just curious how this could happen.

The serpentine belt wraps around and behind the crankshaft balancer crushing the timing cover taking out the timing belt in the process. According to my service advisor your era 5cyl engines should have the serpentine belt tensioner changed with every timing belt service as the tensioner has a high failure rate. I know this because I have heard her talk to several customers over the last couple of years recommending the tensioner be replaced. June

Yeah, if I'm going to fix it, it won't be at the dealer because of the cost. An engine replacement would be even more expensive than the $7.8K, which is basically to replace the pieces that crashed into each other, some of the cylinders and valves

According to my dealer to put a new engine out of the box will cost $12,000.00 for my S80. I imagine a 5cyl would be about the same price range. But that does come with a lifetime parts and labor warranty. June
