Good question. Visually looking at the kits one obviously has more gaskets and one extra black o-ring. Looking on the internet I see the two parts seem to overlap at some sites and are used interchangeably. The larger kit has everything the smaller kit includes, plus extra paper gaskets and one black o-ring. I think the extra paper may be b/c it can be used on the XC90 with twin turbos (two gaskets rather than one) and covers some coolant pipes.

Were it me I would buy the larger one and keep the extras as the gaskets will come in handy in the future. It depends on how much you plan on taking off - the smaller kit should cover just dropping the pan. If you plan on addressing any other gasket or want to have some extra gaskets that are used on the car buy the larger one. I bought the larger one and have used the extra gaskets on other repairs.

Coming with extra O-rings and gaskets I might as well buy the Sump kit costing only $2.50 more. FCP is only 80 miles south so I get deliveries 2 days after I order.

Peaking at the size of the engine one 50ml tube is more than enough for the oil pan.

Whichever kit you purchase you will need to purchase two oil cooler seals separately. They do not come in neither of these kits.

FCP has an Oil Pan Gasket Kit and an Oil Sump Gasket Kit. Which of these 2 kits should I get to drop the oil pan?

Oil Sump Kit

Will one tube 50ml of Permatex Anaerobic Gasket maker be enough or do I need 2 tubes?

I ordered 1/4 pint of Gasoila pipe thread sealant from Amazon.

one 50 ml tube is enough. That stuff is spread with a paint roller. WalMart has a trim roller with a tray for $3 or so that you use and throw away. The anaerobic stuff is only used in thin film uses and dries when air is excluded. It also is cured by the copper fraction that is Al alloys. The amount used is one thick coat of paint. With that little you will still see an orange line ooze out from the bedplate-oil pan seam.
Permatex product is fine for oil pan but the head and bed plate to block seams should be the Volvo or Wurth products. The permatex products have been known to leak in those areas as there are spots where oil pressure is applied to the sealant with no O rings as is done on oil pan.

I've read the reviews on these kits and they don't come with instructions. You need to match them yourself. Reading the reviews is how I found the oil cooler seals aren't included.

Question: Instructions included in kit? Answer: In the three kits I have purchased no. Match them up visually.

Question: Proper sealant - is of the Anaerobic type. I have used Permatex sourced from NAPA on countless cars and never an issue. Just prepare surface properly - apply thin and smooth with roller and torque to spec. (One item make sure remnant oil does not make its way dripping down the inside walls of the engine on to the clean surface - if this happens start over. I spray the walls various times with cleaner and then wipe down. When pan is ready for install - I make a final wipe and clean. Leaving it over night doesn't hurt. Anaerobic sealant dries from the absence of air so when the two highly machined surfaces are pressed together it will begin curing. Any extra that oozes out will be washed away in the oil. Purpose is to fill any micro surface imperfections - so a very thin layer rolled on is what you want.

Question: Oil Cooler seals - as you have to remove the cooler to remove the pan it is best to replace them. They are not cheap, nor expensive, but just replace them and do it right. FCP Euro has them.

Is there a matching paint roller at harbor freight tools? I'm concerned about the sealant sticking to roller. Pix for reference? like this:
