1995 850 GLT Transmission oil leak O-ring 6842413

I borrowed my parents' 1995 850GLT. Drove it a couple of short trips, then 3+ hr trip from Long Island/NYC up to Catskill Mtns where I live. Next morning, started her up, idled a few minutes. Then oil started spitting out of the top connection to the oil cooler on the radiator. About a quart came out before I realized what was happening and shut it off. The hoses look fine. My husband suspects it's just an O-ring and wonders if we need a special tool for that connection?
For what it's worth - the car mostly sits in a garage and only goes on short trips, if any. It had been serviced recently.

No special tools, many have replaced the clips that hold those lines on with a zip tie from Lowes electrical department.

Isn't it 3 hours just to get off LI? (Fellow upstater, Exit 23)

PS - let the experts chime in but I believe you have both a transmission oil cooler and an engine oil cooler on your radiator - take a pic and lets get the right one fixed. There are o-rings on both

Thanks for the response, abscate. My husband was relieved to hear it may well be so simple a fix. And possibly with a Lowes ziptie -- even better. Thanks to your suggestion, I took a photo. The arrow points to the part where the oil comes out. He said it spurts out from the underside of this part when the engine is on. Any further thoughts, abscate or anyone else?

PS - Not sure if the photo is attaching properly. If it doesn't show in this message, I'll try attaching it separately, in another message. Oh, and we're exit 19 off the thruway. 3 hours and change from metropolis.

That is the upper transmission line going to radiator to cool the fluid. O-ring in connection could be bad. Dirty ATF would like motor oil. Zip tie on top of metal clamp as security blanket.

Wow, if that is the ATF, it sure needs to be flushed! It was dark. Will replace the O-ring (and add zip-tie for good measure) and be in touch if we have any more questions. Thanks so much, crlande. - Laurie

You should run some fluid out of that hose into a container, then replace it. You need to correct the ATF level if you have lost some anyway, it has to be correct for the transmission to work.

I've got a picture somewhere of this process.

Edit...found it...page two of this thread. A 1/2 inch ID piece of hose slips over the oring on that upper hose, after removal it, and then you pump the old fluid out and replace it with new. It would be good to get those oring sizes so you have them in hand to replace. I think there are two Orings

There are two Orings, so text him to buy four. Two that end up on the job, one that flies off into the night, and then one extra to get angry that you overspent 59 cents for the job that a mechanic would charge you $150 for.

Its a Volvo thing.

Ha ha. Will do right now. Thanks. When I called to read him your last msg, he wondered whether the step of running some fluid out was necessary, since it had already lost some (maybe up to a quart). And he was very grateful for the reminder to add some!

Here are some pics and a request. Can you put your Orings on a scale and take a pic so we get the size documented?

All we need are outside diameter and thickness, roughly.

One day, someone will need to buy these locally so documenting it here will help them from tearing it apart
