Hello there
just thought I would give an update
I have checked all the earth straps and found no faults
I tried all the things suggested with no luck at all
I checked the output from the alternator and it was giving a reading
8.9v from the B+ connection. do you think I may have bought a dodgy
alternator? the guy said it was tested! also I put a live feed on the small connection and nothing happend. The bat light on my dash comes on in ii position and goes off when engine is cranks. should I just go and get my alternator serviced. its a nightmare to remove from the car due to it being a V70 engine very tight fit I had to take the steering pump off and drop the manifold. I really dont fancy doing all this again to get it checked unless I really have to

Yeah, I think it's doggy at best. At least have it tested....you should be able to do this with it in the car...but to change it out, unfortunately you're going to have to go through everything you mention again. Look on the bright side. After doing it once already, you know what it takes and it should be easier this second time.

Thanks I will be taking it out tomorrow ;-(
I was doing some final checks with the wireing today
and I noticed something that may be my problem or maybe not!
I took the car stereo system out completely. The guy I bought the car off told me he only got it fitted just 2 weeks before I bought the car.
I noticed something strange. the wire feeding the radio is the same wire
that is coming out of my Alternator! red and white striped.
the system has a dvd player and a tv monitor. could this be what is drawing all my current? do you think this is the same wire? does it go into the dashboard? in the Schemetics from the pdf it looks like it does.
cheers

My alternator went three weeks ago, my Volvo garage suggested a loacl re-con place, they tested the unit and found it faulty. Item was reconditioned for
