Gotcha! I was just going to ask how the turbo could put oil into the cylinders which didn't seem likely or possible, but now this makes sense that it isn't putting oil into the cylinders it is possibly putting oil into the exhaust.
Are those seals very hard to replace? I bought a set off ebay for it. They were cheap (OEM volvo parts) but the labor to put them on is going to be the expensive part. Unless it is possible for a fairly mechanically inclined bloke like myself to be able to do it.
Anyone done this before on their S60 AWD?
Thanks!
S60 smokes badly when idling
The turbo has to be removed from the exhaust manifold. I have repalced turbos but never overhauled them. There are rebuilders who do a good job. I have picked up used ones too. Count on spending $250 to $350 for a rebuild and used---maybe less. Just know your used supplier.
Can a guy just get by with replacing the seals or is that the same as rebuilding it?
How big of a job is it to remove the turbo and put a different one on? Can you do it without removing the notorious "Angle gear" whatever that is?(keep in mind this is an AWD)

It is not a quick job, but providing it is just a FWD, you do have to take off coolant and oil lines, the air inlet and outlet pipes, coupling to the exhaust , and oil return line. Believe heat shields come off and 4 nuts holding the turbo to the exhaust manifold. Replacing seals is essentially a rebuild. Might want to look at a manual on how-to as there are perhaps things I have forgotten.

True, the turbo seal is something that is tackled when you rebuild the turbo but the pictures of the items above are installed without removing the turbo. Both are for the oil return line- one (0-ring) is the connection to the sump, the other (gasket) is on the turbo side.
