1999 Fuel Pressure Regulator Long Cranking (ECT replaced)

Post by GinPLUS »

Does the 99 (ME7) have an external fuel pressure regulator? I thought I saw what looked to one under the car very close to the fuel filter but I can't find any reference to it on the internet.

I'm trying to diagnose a long crank time condition after the car sits for a while. I'm guessing fuel pump check valve, but the nonetheless I'm still curious about the FPR...

Buy a cheap tire pressure gauge and use it to confirm whether there is a fuel pressure issue on fuel rail before troubleshooting fuel components.

It is back by the fuel filter but it isn't vacuum controlled like the earlier cars. I think it is just a high pressure dump, basically

Spec is 380 kPa pressure

Thanks for the responses.

I haven't put my gauge on it yet but I'm fairly certain its a bleed off issue. The longer it sits, the longer I have to crank it over. The fuel trims are near perfect when cruising.

A bad check valve on the fuel pump can cause your issue. The way to test it is to put a fuel pressure gauge on the fuel rail and observe the fuel pressure. After you turn the car off it should maintain that pressure, within 10 PSI, for 20 minutes. If it quickly drops to near zero that is your problem.

The check valve is actually on the fuel pump itself and officially you need to replace the entire fuel pump assembly to repair it. If you have an XC or a AWD version then it is a huge job to replace the pump and many have added a check valve onto the fuel line near the filter. If you have a FWD version then changing the pump is fairly easy and you can get to it through a cover behind the rear seat.

As a workaround you can turn the key to Position II for a few seconds and then turn the key off and repeat. After two or three cycles it should start much easier.

This ended up being the coolant temp sensor but at least I learned a few new things along the way.

Hey! I have a similar issue but replacing the coolant temp sensor did not fix it, Where can I fund the fuel pressure regulator on 1999-2000 s70 Turbo?

It’s back behind the rear passenger wheel. There is a tiny vacuum hose off the evap line that provides the reference pressure.
