Cam hub and Camshaft alignment

Post by Kerpre »

Hey there guys, new to the site and also new to Volvo Engines.
I brought a used 2000 C70 with the B5244T in. It had a warped head so have found a new one and sent it off to the rebuilder to skim etc. when getting the engine back they have disassembled the camshafts (exhaust VVT) but they did not mark anything when doing so.

So my question is what is the procedure to align the cam gears or hubs to the shaft itself?

Obviously there is no point timing the engine with the gear timing marks if they are not true on the shaft.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I’m very new to VVT and also very new to timing

If I remember correctly, the side opposite the VVT hub, etc is where you install the locking tool. Once the tool is on, you setup the timing for the camshafts. The VVT hub takes a little bit of care but isn't stupid difficult to do.

So the set point for the camshaft itself is where the notches are horizontal? Is there anyway to tell which side of 180 degrees is correct? Or can I tell by which set of valves are open in relation to number 1 cylinder? Sorry if this doesn’t make much sense, I’m a bit of a rookie

You need to have the Camshafts and Crankshaft locked down with a alignment kit before you start.
The attached file will tell you how to get the VVT hub aligned with the camshaft.

Ok thanks for that file Rick, this also may be a silly question but to align all this I assume I have to bolt down the rocker cover first?

I should rephrase that, how do I bolt down the rocker cover/crank case cover while I’m not sure on the timing , as I don’t want to force a valve into a piston, thanksnin advance.

Yes, the horizontal notches on the rear are the camshafts are the camshafts datums.

The horizontal notches on the rear of the cams are off centered. Correctly aligned the Intake cam horizontal notch will be above center and the Exhaust cam horizontal notch will be below center. The camshaft alignment tool can produce this alignment and none other ... you cannot install the tool wrong.

If you had the alignment kit you could install the cams aligned into the camshaft cover before you lower the cover to the head.
