'96 850 Gauge Cluster Problems

Post by JonTechno »

1996 Volvo 850 2.5L Automatic. Intermittent problems. Engine light and ABS light constantly illuminated, Service Light intermittent.

Gauge Cluster has 3 common problem scenarios:

EITHER
All works as intended
OR
Everything except the Speedometer and Odometer works
OR
All gauges bounce for a while, then settle into one of the previous two scenarios

Pulled the cluster once, cleaned all connections. Made no difference. No noticeable wire or terminal damage seen.

Usual issues are:

1) ABS module failure. This will affect the speedo, rev counter (possibly), and the odometer. Usually when the ABS module fails it will often trip the engine check light too.
2) Ignition switch failing. Try carefully wwiggling the key when car is running and see what happens. Naturally do this somewhere safe!

ABS module, Matty at Mid-West ABS is your friend here.

And get those engine codes checked out.
Your Check Engine light probably has
messages stacked up for you.

The good news? If the service light just
comes on for two minutes when you start
the car, it’s only reminding you that you’ve
exceeded your mileage triggered service
interval. It can be reset and off ya go!
