Volvo 850, 1997, seat belt replacement

My driver's side seat belt won't come out. I think it has to be replaced. Has anyone had any experience with this? Any advise?

Before you do anything involving the seat belts, disconnect the battery and then wait a few minutes before you touch anything. Make sure you have your radio code. The seat belts are actually part of the SRS system.

From there it is a matter of removing the B-post trim panel to get access to the reel.

I downloaded the online manual for the 95 Volvo and read about disconnecting the battery. Unfortunately this was after I took off the B panel to invesitigate. Fortunately nothing blew up in my face. I managed to slowly (about 30 minutes) extract the belt. It won't work at all and probably needs to be replaced. It looks to me like the part is about $105.00, has anyone had this done at a Volvo dealership? Does it make sense to tackle this on my own?

Yes, people do it on there own...get the belt with the tensioner....replace all of it. And like was said earlier, make sure the battery is disconnected when you do...oh, and just in case, don't stand close to the belt or have someone sitting in the seat when you hook the battery back up after the repair.

I'm getting slightly intimidated. Are there some horror stories out there about replacing this seat belt?

I just replaced mine. The part is available @ MySwedishParts.com. Ordered on Monday and had Wednesday.

My only issue is SRS light remains on. I assume it is a code or something.

The most difficult part was getting in to loosen the bolt by the seat that anchors the belt. I had not moved the seat up before disconnecting the battery. And the bolt is in an awkward location. You have to gently remove the trim piece on the side of the seat that has the seat adjusting buttons on it. Otherwise, it is a matter of taking out three bolts and a screw, unplugging the cord to the SRS and then doing the reverse.
