S40 2008 throwing a code p0011

Post by Austingrayy »

Hi everyone, I'm new here hope I will get what I want.
Ok back to my issue, I have a sweet s40 2008 throwing a code p0011, I understand it has to do with timing, I have had the timing belt replaced, timing reset over 4 times, yet the code keeps popping up, now here is the real issue, the car idles roughly, like the engine sound goes up and down, checked for air leakages non found, the funny this is when ever the AC is on, the rough idle goes away, though can be felt faintly, sometimes it you don't feel at all. The car is at 180k mileage, recently change the oil as well learnt bad oil could clog vvt solenoids, haven't changed the solenoids though and the fuel economy gone so bad. Someone told me to check my throttle body, I unplugged it and it runs fine but not much power when accelerated, now I'm confused, what should I do? Should I get a new vvt solenoids and also change the throttle body? I love this and still hope I can get another100k mileage out of it.

P0011 = ECM-5F Camshaft reset valve.

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information

Condition
The engine control module (ECM) calculates the camshaft position in relation to the crankshaft using the camshaft position (CMP) sensor and engine speed (RPM) sensor signals. The control module adjusts the camshaft position using the reset valve. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-5F is stored if the required change to the camshaft position takes too long.

Substitute value
None.

Possible source
  • 1. Low oil pressure in engine.
    2. Blocked camshaft reset valve oil ducts.
    3. Defective camshaft reset valve.
Fault symptoms
Poor performance.

----------------------------------------------------------
First try:
  • 1. Cleaning out the Camshaft Reset Valve and oil ducts under it.
    2. Make sure your oil is correct and in good condition.
    3. Clean the electrical connection to the Camshaft Reset Valve.
Today's engines are picky about oil quality.

Camshaft reset valve is the part inside the red box.

Thanks for the info, will try and clean the reset valves and get back to you, if it works fine, if it doesn't will get it replaced.
Also found out the throttle body is bad, changed it and the performance increased to about 80% but the code p0011 still comes on. Will keep u posted.

Clean the reset valve and the oil ducts under it. The Valve controls the flow of oil to the Variable Valve Timing hub on the front of the camshaft. If the ducts are clogged up, the VVT will not react fast enough, which is what P0011 means.

I need to clarify something, what's the difference between the cam reset valves and the vvt solenoids? Cant seems to locate the cam reset valve on my t5 2.4i non turbo s40 2008 engine, all I see is one sticking out big soleniod just before the first ignition coil from the passenger side. Is that the reset valve?

Welcome to the English language which often has two or more words, or names, for the same thing.

Cam Reset Valve is what Volvo calls the part, VVT solenoid is a common name for a Cam Reset Valve. Two different names for the same thing.

Cam Reset Valve and the VVT solenoid are the same part.

Hello, got a new CRV installed, that took care of the p0011 code and the idle problem for few days, now I'm having a new issue, the car idles rough but once the AC is on the idle smoothens, changed the throttle body too, no more code 0011, can it be the MAF or something else, the only code I'm getting is for oxygen sensor which intend changing soon but will appreciate more light on this rough idle disappearing when AC is on and comes back when it's turned off

Always list the full code number and don't shorten them up! P0011 not 0011. The P tells us something. There is a B0011, C0011 and a U0011 also. The codes communicate a lot more than symptoms do.

There is more then one O2 code.

Hold off on replacing the O2 sensor. Replacing an O2 sensor is an option of last resort. Good O2 sensors are expensive and there are lots of things other then the O2 sensor that can trip some of them O2 codes.

Clear all the codes and see what comes back. List any that do come back here.

You can try cleaning the MAF sensor, use MAF cleaner only.

Which engine do you have?

If you are going to be doing your own repairs, one of the Chinese DiCE clones would be a good investment. You get can the official Volvo error codes.

Thanks, it's P0011, it's a non turbo 5 cylinder engine, I tried unplugging the connector to the MAF no difference in the engine but the moment I plugged it back, the engine shut down. (MAF has been cleaned) . took out a friend MAF to test the car, no much difference don't want spend money on parts that are not the cause.
P0300 sometimes appears and clears itself again without resetting it, if I'm correct, P0300 is random misfire?
Can it be a vacuum leak? ( Spark plugs we're just changed, injectors just serviced)
