Triple B,
That was the problem. The wiring on the sensor was all melted. The insulation on the wires inside the shielding had all just melted or disentigrated the plastic coating on the wires. The Import Auto Parts in Lakeland, FL had 1 in stock. That was the problem, fixed! Thank You, you helped me out quite a bit.
What other sensors and relays should I keep on hand to eliminate a future tow? I don't want to carry an entire parts store with me, just the most common electronics that end up leaving someone stranded.
Thanks again,
Joe

Great, I'm glad it's fixed.
I would replace the fuel pump relay also. They fail as often as the RPM sensors.
I would check to see if the thermostatic air cleaner thermostat is ok. I'm not sure you have one though. Check to see if there is a silver hose that goes from your air filter housing to the exhaust manifold area.
If so, there is a thermostat that opens a door to allow hot air into the intake system when the engine is warming up. This can stick open to hot air all the time and burn out the MAF sensor.

TripleB,
Thanks again. Have you ever heard of the RADIO NOISE SUPPRESSION relay causing a problem? I read somewhere that it can cause a problem too because it is linked to the fuel injectors. I also read that many of the solder joints on the old relays were bad and needed to be resoldered.
This was my first problem I have had on this volvo since I bought it about 6 months ago. I will have to say it was a pretty easy fix. When did they start putting the diagnostic testers on these cars? Did the 740's and 240s have one too?
Thanks again, I'm sure You will be hearing from me again. I'm looking for another Volvo and I'm not sure what it will be yet. It will be either a 240,740 or 940.
Take care,
Joe

The suppression relay is what powers the injectors and the radiator fan. It is a black relay that is near the shock towers in the engine compartment.
I'm not sure if your car has one, but if it does, I would consider replacing that too.
Look here under "Multi Function Relay" to see what it looks like.
