Front & Rear Bevel Gear Fluid Replacement

Post by XC70Rider »

The front bevel gear was full so I siphoned out 800ml. Used a 2oz syringe to siphon it out. I then cleaned the syringe and also used it to press in new GL-5 fluid. I chose Valvoline 75W90 synthetic Gear oil which is a GL-5 fluid.

The drain plug crush washers for both front and rear are Volvo PN 11998.

Here's a photo off the drain plug facing the passenger side.

Used a 13mm wrench to reach the drain plug.

The thick gear fluid was dark brown.

Here's the syringe I used with a 12" long tubing. The tubing needs to be firm to avoid being cut by the gear teeth.

The rear bevel gear drain plug is harder to reach. The drain plug faces the rear of vehicle.

Here's a photo of an extended swivel wrench attached to the 13mm drain plug.

This is the rear drain plug after adding fluid and installing a crush washer.

The rear bevel drain plug had no crush washer so the fluid leaked out and the gear was empty. I was able to press in ~700ml of new Valvoline 75W90 synthetic gear oil.

I've never heard grinding on the empty rear differential gear. Wonder if it's damaged or not?

I have never worked on a 2007 XC70, but have worked on the XC90 and 2005 V70 AWD. On both of these cars there are two different parts to the rear differential - one for the Haldex, one for the differential.

If yours is the same design, are you sure you filled the right one? Did the area show signs of leakage from the missing crush washer?

Thought I would alert you just in case - the oils are different and I would hate to see you grenade the Haldex.

There was black crud surrounding the drain plug due to the missing washer so it appears to of leaked.

This photo is the rear drain plug before touching it.

I found CN90s write up regarding the XC90 gear fluid replacement. The rear gear is different on the XC70. I used VIDA to find the gear fluid drain plug.

Here's the diagram VIDA provides for the rear final drive gear. The drain plug and washer are parts 2 and 3 facing the rear. Cannot find a haldex drain plug yet. Will keep searching.

On the XC90 the haldex and final drive gear drain plugs are facing the driver's side.

Does the AOC takes different fluid OR access what you have in final drive?
You may want to service item #18

As Herman noted in the earlier post the AOC (Haldex) takes a different fluid than the bevel and final drive gears. It is part 11 in your diagram. I've read there is no substitute for this fluid so use only Volvo. The drain plug crush washer is the same size M18 as for the gears. Part 18 in your diagram is the filter which is above the oil pump. Part 4 is the oil pump which is high priced. If ever servicing this pump you'll want to purchase a service kit which is part 5 in the diagram.

>Volvo AOC (Haldex) Fluid: 31367941
>Drain Plug crush washer: 11998
>AOC filter: 30787687
>AOC oil pump service kit: 30783288

EDIT: Decided to purchase this simpler oil pump service kit on ebay. It has the O-rings and bolts needed.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Haldex-AOC-pre ... 2749.l2649

The kit is being shipped from Latvia so won't see it until early March.

Here's a good video on replacing the AOC fluid, filter and servicing the oil pump.
