The front sprocket locking tool will hold sprocket gears in position but not prevent the camshaft itself from moving when you torque the big center bolt. That bolt goes on like a lugnut at around 80 ftlb.

The moment of truth has arrived. She is all back together, battery connected, ready to start. Question: if the timing is off and I try to start the engine will the engine get destroyed? Might be a dumb question but I've been told by so many DIYers to be careful or you'll ruin your engine.

I turned the engine over at least 4 times using the crankshaft after I put everything back together and it turned over fine, everything lined right back up to the timing marks top dead center. But, when I put the key in the ignition my check engine light blinks continuously. Obviously not a good sign but I can't run the codes with the engine off, at least I don't think so with my code reader.

I will keep searching for the answer online and in the forum. Thanks for any feedback.

Place a 30mm socket on the crankshaft and turn the engine over 720° clockwise (two rotations) as viewed from the front of the engine. If there is an interference condition you will find it before any damage can be done.

DO NOT turn the engine counterclockwise. Turning the engine counterclockwise will slacken the timing belt and cause it to slip.

If you made it 1440° clockwise without interference, your good to go.

thanks. i need to add this detail. when i was turning it over clockwise using the crankshaft i watched both timing gears closely. as i was turning i noticed i started to feel some minor resistance and the exhaust gear would move a little. it’s hard to describe the movement. very minor. then i would just apply a tiny bit of force and it would keep turning smoothly. i am being hyper cautious here. i didn’t mention it before because i figures it was so minor and man this is a tough job. thanks for the feedback. i’m really thinking i’m good to go. if there was any significant interference i would not have been able to turn it over. thank you!

Expected: Valve spring compression reaching the peak. Pistons top of compression stroke.

sounds spot on to what i was feeling. okay. i’m going for it. not sure why check engine light is blinking though. didn’t even start the car yet. i’m going for it tomorrow evening. this way i don’t ruin the rest of my weekend if she doesn’t start. thanks again. huge help. i appreciate it.

Update: Well, she started right up, no check engine light. purring like a kitten. I was beside myself. I took her onto the highway up to about 50mph. I don't have the under engine guard or the side timing cover back on so I didn't want to push it yet. When I returned home I put a piece of cardboard under the front of the engine and waited about two hours. I see one tiny drop of oil on the cardboard so I am hopeful that I fixed the leak. I am hoping that might be residual oil left over from when she was really leaking badly. I would have a puddle under the car by now if it was leaking the way it was before.

I can't thank you guys enough. This was a big job for me. Timing, camshafts, broken tools. I've been trying to fix this oil leak for months. Thanks for all of your help!!!! I could not have done it without you guys!

Congrats on successfully fixing the oil leak!

I fixed an oil leak last week which turned out to be the oil sump. Being my first Volvo timing belt job I was biting my teeth when turning her on. :shock:

Also installed new water pump, thermostat, oil pump kit, and timing belt kit. I've driven her 121 miles since the fix and no oil nor coolant leaks can be found with an UV black flashlight. I put UV dye in both the engine and cooling system to detect leaks.

If you want to determine of you still have a oil leak decisively, add some UV tracer dye to the oil. If the tracer dye ends up outside the engine you still have some leakage. If the tracer dye does not ends up outside the engine, no leaks.

UV Tracer dye is fluorescent. When a UV light shines on it, the dye will emitted light in the visible range. Like a Black light poster does.

Diagnostics through chemistry, you should be able to appreciate that.
