So I bought this beauty of a 240 about a year ago as a town car. She's had some transmission issues in the cold. It stays under 30 degrees for about 7 months of the year here and my volvo has trouble upshifting to any gear beyond 3, I'll get up to 55 or 60 and it'll just run really high revs and not shift. I used to have a 940 that all I had to do to let it shift would be let off the accelerator and it'd shift just fine, but not with this new-to-me one. I'm going to change the transmission fluid soon as well to see if that's a problem but I've barely driven 1,000 miles in this last year. So that's problem one.
problem two is my rear left tail lights won't come on at all anymore. I've swapped the bulbs out a time or two and even tried another bulb socket to see if that was the issue, but still nothing. My rear left blinker still works just fine, as well as the right rear side. I'm just not sure if it's the cold, the wiring, or what to replace first in order to get it all figured out.
any suggestions help.
Problems I know of

Go to the dealer and get a new circuit board for the tail light and you should have working lights again. Where the bulbs go in is a paper thin green circuit board. It might come as a backplate assembly I never had a 240, but I did have a 740 and had the same problem. June

Yeah, that's what I was thinking about, I've just got to figure out how to unplug and rewire it back in. I also checked my transmission fluid and it was red and seemed just fine. no smells. but I should probably change it out just to be sure. Thanks for the suggestion to replace the circuit board btw.

I believe once you pull the tail light assembly and unplug it then remove all the bulb retainers the circuit board lifts off. Place the new board then reinstall the lightbulbs plug the taillight assembly back in, than reinstall. I believe that is all that's involved to replace the circuit board on the taillight.turbobrick90 wrote: ↑22 Feb 2019, 12:58 Yeah, that's what I was thinking about, I've just got to figure out how to unplug and rewire it back in. The 740 had a drain plug on the transmission pan, so I am sure the 240 has one too. You might try draining and refilling with proper fluid. I would stay away from multiple vehicles fluid. Probably it takes Dextron 3. As I recall the 740 transmission had a filter in the pan. Check for a replacement filter for your exact model and if a filter kit is available consider dropping the transmission pan and replacing the filter. After all these years the filter may be partially blocked with debris like metal particles causing a reduced flow especially when the fluid is thick in cold weather. Just a thought. June

Ok looks like the 1990 240 does have a filter with media in it rather than a screen. I would order a kit and change the filter and fluid. Rather than just the fluid.
