I found this under my car. What is it and how do I put it back?

Nothing like a good challenge to start the day. Damper for a diesel, #5 on the diagram, can see where its supposed to be mounted. Little odd that you found it on the ground, find a large bolt down there as well?

I'm curious as to what's inside that little thing.

Umm, one second looking at the diagram: if you found that on the ground this would mean the bolt that attaches your upper engine mount fell out/engine mount disconnected. You want to rectify this situation immediately with a new bolt/nut.

If the engine mount is intact (bolt is not missing) this would indicate a previous service/mechanic left this under the hood/missed putting it back where it belongs after having this apart.

Thank you for your help. looks like the mount has all its parts except for the damper. must have happened when they removed the DPF filter and that was removed months ago, so I am very lucky that the damper did not roll out under that cover.

Those guys charging $150 an hour for their work botched this one.

It’s even better that you found it as it’s a NLA part!

I love curious people, Mr Brian. Love to open this up and see what’s inside? Swedish oak chips maybe?

It is a Damper so I'll bet on different masses inside depending on application. A green mass for some applications. A yellow mass for other applications.

Does this thing have some sharp resonance IT absorbs from the engine top mount?

We found a similar thing on wizechatmgrs XC70, a metal box under the car bolted to the frame and mounts filled with Swedish squirrel dung. Yellow type.
