check engine light and throttle body Topic is solved

This is my first car which was gifted to me by my aunt, and it is an 06 S60 2.5T with 156000 miles.

My problem is this check engine light that refuse to leave. The codes that come up are P0170 and two P0101 from the computer. In response, my mechanic changed the MAF twice, but after 15 minutes of driving the light comes back on for both sensors and he returned the original, so its not the MAF. There is also no air leaks or damaged electrical wiring problems according to the mechanic.

So the next thing I did was to check the throttle body, and I discovered a ring of dirt all over the edges. So I am wondering if it's either worth it to attempt to clean the ETB or just replace it in order to clear the check engine, because I think this is literaly the only problem left with the car, and I cannot pass inspection with it on.

I have experienced stalling while starting the car, while accelerating the car "jumps" on occasion, large fuel consumption, and rumbling while the gear is in reverse or not in park/neutral. Also I replaced the air filter for an OEM one, and code were cleared before.

So what should I do from here, clean the Throttle body, just replace it, or is it something else?

Replacement throttle bodies don’t come cheap - no need to replace, at least not yet.

Clean it with some spray carberator cleaner and a toothbrush. When spraying the carb cleaner try to hold the throttle body in an orientation that doesn’t allow the carb cleaner to run into the holes for the butterfly pivot shaft.

It's worth cleaning, and also posting up your throttle body part number in case we have some folks nearby who have a spare to test and try. Just remind them to take the R train, not the R Volvo.

The part number is 30711553. But will it solve the check engine problem I am having? Running out of avenues and time to fix it, also my temp inspection sticker expired.

Won't know until you give it a cleaning.

My faulty ETM was throwing the P0101 alone. The ECM wasn't pointing at the ETM soley but was telling me I had an air leakage. The internal plastic gears were slightly worn out so it couldn't adjust the valve properly. I replaced many of parts and did a good cleaning before I threw on a new ETM to solve the issue.

As mentioned earlier try cleaning it first because they aren't cheap.

To properly diagnose the throttle body you need a program called VIDA And an afternoon to run the tests on the throttle body, you can’t test it with standard equipment.

The folks who have 10,000 hours in invested in broken cars can diagnosis by symptom, but the rest of us can’t.

Try the cleaning and see it helps

Thanks guys. After driving it around for hours, the p0101 and p0170 check engine codesdoes not show up anymore after i cleaned the throttle body.

I also managed to pass inspection.

P.S Leave it to Volvo to put a throttle body in the most awkward position.
