Front axles wont go back in.

2008 Volvo XC 90 all wheel drive 3.2. I’m replacing the transmission. I have the old one out and I am in the process of trying to meet up the replacement. I imagine I need to turn one of the axles to get the transmission shaft matchup To go into place. Having a difficult time getting either axle to go back in its place. Am I missing something regarding lineup? Quick help needed thanks

Not sure I understand your problem. Are you having a hard time getting the circlips on the end of the CV axle to seat, or is it another problem. Spines should line up and travel a certain distance until the circlip causes interference - is this your problem? That is how my 2004 GM Tranny XC90 worked.

NOTE: When installing the CV Axles, DO NOT let it hang from the differential/transaxle at any time during installation. The added stress can damage the seals and possibly the inboard joint. Keep the CV as straight as possible, get a helper if needed.

If not I will pull up VIDA and see if they have any comments if you need me to.

The RH ones should go all the way through the angle gear an slip into the transmission with only a twist to get splines aligned. Left side as mentioned above but you usually have to get it spline aligned and then pop it inward. The snap ring gives resistance and has to be compressed to go in so some effort has to be used. I often pick up my rubber mallet and smack to get it to jump in. I always lube the LH one on these 5 and 6 speeds with dry axle gears so not only does it go in easier, it will come out without that big fight if it has rusted. Wheel bearing grease or grease gun chassis lube are fine for this.

I now see the shorter driver's side CV Axle/shaft has the clip on he end so I need to lube and center it but the passenger side cv Axle/shaft doesn't. It goes it so far and no matter how much I turn and twist it for the gear threads to line up it wont.

If I am following your endeavor, you should have the old transmission. Give jimmy57's insert, twist to align, suggestion on it.

Wife brought in some Chinese for a garage dining experience!

Organ Donor Tranny is in! Lots of hookups left to do including getting the stubborn axles back in!

Jimmy my man I greased up the dry difficult one and it went right in!

New tranny is in and installing stuff on top tonight (Water pump, Pwr steering, A/C, etc).
Doing fluid flushing, diagnostics, VIDA tranny resets, test driving, etc. tomorrow.

Installing an in-line filter (see photo) for the transmission fluid.
