Low coolant light on /96 850
Low coolant light on /96 850
Hello! I have a 96 850 115000 mi. I live in PA. The low coolant light came recently while driving. The expansion tank is full and the hose to the radiator seems to be open because when I squeeze the upper and lower hoses the fluid in the tank gurggles. I assume the radiator is full, the engine doesn;t overheat. Is the sensor in the radiator or the coolant tank? Does anyone know? Thank you very much. Steve

It's in the base of the expansion tank.
With the engine cold unscrew the filler cap to release pressure.
Refit the cap and lift the tank out of its mounting.
Disconnect the wiring connector at the sensor.
Turn the tank over and pull the sensor out of its sealing grommet.
Refitting is a reverse of removal.
Bill.

Bill, thanks alot for your fast reply. So I'm wondering, if the tank is full do I have a faulty sensor? If I disconnect it or cut the wire, will the dash light go off? Is it something that maybe could be taken out and cleaned ? Thanks you!
Steve

The sensor is either faulty or stuck. It will often work again if you just smack the side of the tank.

When cold, unscrew the cap, take a screwdriver, stick it in in toward the bottom and you will feel the sensor.
I just lightly tapped it all around, presto, no more light.
The float get stuck at times
