Hi,
I have a new problem and a few bruises on the back of my head. I have tried to find the answer on this forum to no avail. My tailgate does not have gas struts and everything to do with keeping it up appears to be behind the roof lining. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Tony.

I thought the gas struts where hidden under the roof liner? Try reading this link:

Thanks Greasefingerss,
I saw this thread on the forum but didn't read it thoroughly as it was for a later model than mine. I wrongly assumed the struts they were talking about were the sort that attach to the door opening and the hatch sides.
As I couldn't see struts attached in such a way I assumed that Volvo had used some dark arts with my model and who knows what I would have found behind the roof lining?
I should have looked at what needed doing before putting cyber ink to cyber paper!
Now I know what is involved I shall give it a try. Tony

I just did this job on my '94 855 tonight, and it was very easy. The instructions in the link posted above pretty much cover it. I had my son holding the gate open while I did the swap, but he wasn't quite tall enough to lift it up to the full open position. I was lying on my back in the cargo area anyways, so a little push with my foot was all that was needed to lift the gate up high enough to snap the new struts in place.
The replacement units I purchased from FCP Groton have little clips that need to be removed first, and then re-installed after the unit is in place. BTW, I had none of the fitment issues that others have reported. These snapped right in place with no problems. I must say I'm very impressed with FCP. Prices and shipping cost were great, and shipping time to Canada was very fast, only 3 days!

Bill,
Thanks for the contact details for SGS Engineering. I've emailed them for the costs and await a reply. I'll remove the struts early next week and send them off. I will report back with my experiences of their service. Cheers.
