2002 2.4T tranny lurch

Post by Mike Langlois »

Greetings,
I have a 2002 2.4T that Lurches or Slams into reverse. All gears work fine and the tranny essentially operates smoothly, except there seems to be a hesitation then a slam in to reverse. I have watched the motor/tranny move when this happens, but the mounts 'seem' to be intact. Only thing I noticed is that the tranny dip stick is broken and may not be giving an accurate tranny fluid level. Fluid has been flushed recently and I am hoping I have a level problem. I am going to try a dip stick from another Volvo to try and get an accurate tranny fluid level reading. Any thoughts as to why a functional tranny would hesitate then slam into reverse?

Dirt, roughened servo bores and leaking pistons within said bores can effect operation.

Are you certain the correct fluid was used for that recent flush?

After determining the fluid's level AND cleanliness I'd consider adding a dose (1 oz. per system quart) of LubeGard red.

I was amazed at how well it improved the operation of my '02's transmission though I must add that my reverse function wasn't bad.

How is your dipstick "broken"? Is the shoulder there? Is the stick there?

+1 for Lubegard red, my 2002 V70 T5 shifts silky smooth after a drain/flush/fill with Idemitsu and the addition of Lubegard.

I have to admit that I used the Idemitsu on the V70 X/C and the toyota 1V on the 2.4 T. Neither had ugly fluid, but the X/C has been under my care for 4 years and the 2.4T is new. I am going to get my VIDA/DICE computer working and address this issue. Have said ' Everyting, but automatic trannies' for years and I mean everything; Maybe it is time to tackle a transmission for fun! Is there any significance to a lag between shifting and lurching into reverse gear(only?).

My 2002 V70 2.4t also can sometimes lag, then shift hard into reverse. My major complaint is the hard shifting back into first gear when slowing down. My plan is to pull the linear solenoids out and clean them up using the Transgo kit.
Any suggestions on an engine brace lift to buy and what Transgo kit. It seams that I'm just buying the Transgo kit for the drill bit and end caps.
