Okay,.this thread is to get help on running our cars without a PS pump
Anyone have ideas or access to belts to try this?
Let’s keep it 1992-1998 as the 1999-2000 are bastards of course.
One problem I see is the PS pump is giving most of the downward tension on the tensioner , so cutting that out and getting tension will be tough
Maybe a short belt looping just the crank, alternator and AC?

Why would we be running without a PS pump?

There are couple of questions I’m curious about.
Is it practical to operate a P80 without PS?
How difficult ( and safe ) is it to drive with disabled power steering?
And is the rack designed to last without hydraulic assistance?

You cannot run the engine without the PS pump in place, there would be no tensioner. If you also removed the AC compressor, still no way to tension the belt.
If all you want is to run the engine for diagnostics, take off the belt and run just on battery power?

Scenario - PS rack blows seals, oil wont stay in, you are 5 hours from home, $600 tow bill vs nursing it home. Thread is about trying to find a solution to drive car short term with no PS and not pouring 10 gallons of PS fluid onto Mother Earth
Its being played out right now in PHL of course, in a nearby thread.
You can drive any PS car without PS, on the highway you will barely notice the loss.

1. Disconnect the hoses from the PS pump to the Rack.
2. Shunt a hose from the PS out to the PS return.
3. Top the PS pump off with fluid.
4. Drive the thing home.
If one can get the two hoses off on the rack end then couple the two together that would do the trick.

A while ago, I looked at a V70 that the owner was almost giving away because it had a frozen AC pump. I was going to throw the shorter belt on it and drive it away, but someone outbid me while I was at work.
It’s take some math, but it seems to me that routing for no AC is about as much shorter as routing for no PS, but with AC. The problem would be tension, and that you can’t run the belt over the tensioner instead of under it.
The best idea would probably be to sabotage the PS pump somehow, so that it’s freewheeling. That way, you’d be up up and away without risking anything else.

I believe eliminating the p.s. pump would take the tensioner totally out of play. If you find the belt, the slack you'll need to get it on would probably cause slipping at the very least and or not have enough tension to drive anything.
But just my guess. Good Luck

You only have alternator load if you keep the AC off. But, I agree, getting a belt on tight enough to drive the alternator without slipping looks like a challenge

Accidents can happen anywhere. And even if the rolling advantageabscate wrote: ↑16 Mar 2019, 13:34 Scenario - PS rack blows seals, oil wont stay in, you are 5 hours from home, $600 tow bill vs nursing it home. of being on the highway is a factor, the quick twitch when something
happens at speed will not be available with no power assist. Especially
if the driver doesn't have a lot of upper body strength.
600 hundred bucks seems like cheap insurance when you consider
the possible consequences. I'd go with the tow and be done with it.
If that's not an option, looping the the pump back into itself seems
like the best way to deal with a road fix for blown rack seals. Good idea!
In any case, best of luck and I hope that this adventure ends happily for all.
