Made an excellent tool, itlifts the plastic piece fully up, but I still cannot release the fuel lines
Even using leverage .
.. May tow it 135 miles to the shop

On the tool what is the width of the gap? Does the gap fit the pipe tight? Your trying to push a Ring on the bottom of the connector up. The Ring pushes the retainer holding the connector in place out of the way.

The Ring (Pink) slides up between the pipe and the Retainer (Red) pushing the Retainer away from the pipe.

It might help if you push down on the hose, up with the tool, then after pull on the hose and follow the connector with the tool.

The tool does need to be under the Ring.

I believe I've used needle nose pliers in a pinch.
Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Hi, Pump finally changed ! Had to use big prybar and new release tool. Two problems. Return fitting came apart and not able to re-assemble. Finally cut it off and used f I hose and clamps. No leaks and runs great ! Also gage now reads extremely WRONG. The plastic release for the return was worn thru and the metal retainer was smashed/bent beyond repair. Auto parts store had NOTHING that would fit.
THANKS ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT !

Admittedly low tech, but after trying just about everything, I had success with a giveaway cheap metal paint can opener, as depicted below. I haven't tested it yet, but I'm pretty sure it can also be used to open bottles of beer :D Good to know when working on the Volvo fuel system....

Little pry bar !!! NOT, had to use one 4 foot long.
Made 3 custom tools each one of heavier metal than the last.
None worked alone.
