ok I'll give it a try by the way the fuel pump controller on my ride is pink colored and labled so. If the fuel pump controller is bad would the egine still crank to a start?

Ahh, now I know why it's harder to start after playing with the throttle pedal with the car turned off (1988 740), what I'm doing is introducing air into the system! But my 740 has the same problem still unresolved.. I think it may be a stuck check-valve -- it's supposed to maintain some pressure in the system so the fuel doesn't flow back into the tank, thus requiring the pump to work the full distance again...DCintraining wrote:If it's not plugs or electrical, then it is probably fuel. The only other thing that comes to mind is that you are losing fuel pressure when the car is turned off. If air is introduced to the system then the fuel pump would have to work for a few seconds (or more) to get the pressure back up to the fuel injectors. Anyone have any ideas on how to (safely) test this? Have you pulled the codes off the computer? Here's the site to tell you how:

Off topic--
I just never wanted to leave my car with the mechanics overnight. Just now my sister called and complained about the lack of air conditioning. This would be the third time I've had to refill since undergoing the retrofit R134a procedure last November, this coming from an authorized Volvo service shop!

Oh yeah, my issue above was resolved when they readjusted my idle speed.... but now I need a new battery - I had it run down too many times.

Ok I tested the fuel controller relay-it works fine-now what? I still have internittant 6-8 seconds churning before the engine cranks. Seems to be an issue after engine is heated. Is fuel pump the culprit?
Any uggestions welcomed.

You said-
as matthew suggested earlier, check that you have fuel pressure by unscrewing the cap on the right side of the fuel rail, and depressing the schrader valve. If fuel spritzs out, then your fuel pump is okay.
Is the fuel rail run along the valve cover? I cannot locate the valve you refer to.
