Transfer case is shot

Post by Fiodor »

Hello guys, my mechanic was going to replace the angle gear sleeve when he diagnosed my transfer case as dead, no oil left so the gears are destroyed.
How should I proceed?
should I rebuild it? Buy a good used one? Is there another option?
I'm kinda depressed since I don't have a lot of money and this seems to be one of the most expensive parts to fail on this car.

Thanks for your help

You can remove the main drive shaft, and there is a chance it will stop any noise/vibration. You can leave it like that. Also, there is the option to completely remove the drive shaft AND the transfer case (angle gear). I did this on my car years ago. The issue is that you need to create a system to hold the angle gear sleeve in place, so it doesn't leak fluid. For years I used two worm gear hose clamps linked together and tightened on the passenger's CV axle and pushed up against the angle gear sleeve to keep it in. Recently, a mechanic created a 3D printed model then had a machine shop create a holder for the angle gear sleeve.

Or like you said, you can have the case replaced, but it's not a great system, and expensive to fix. Likely other parts will eventually fail.

Bonne chance!

Have you tried Bildelsbasen in Sweden? A good used one could be the option for this mileage car. Though the shipping cost aren't cheap.

Wow! Congrats, Fiodor! I have been looking for a good used one for two years now. I accidentally bought the wrong one, my car is a 1999 but has 2000 specs, so a 1999 replacement didn't fit.

Where did you find yours? Thanks in advance and good luck on the install!

I bought it on bildelsbasen, had to call in Sweden to get a quote for the shipping and they then made an order for me.

Ah! Glad it worked with the shipping cost. I bought several things on there, always pleased.

Another option is to leave it alone (leave the sleeve and angle gear alone) and drive the car as FWD vehicle.
