Replace right rear axle seal on 2011 XC90 V8 HELP!

Post by Pretribrapper »

Hi,
I have a 2011 xc90 v8 with a leaky right rear axle seal. I need to know how to get the cv axle out of the rear differential on the passenger side. I have the wheel off, the brake caliper and rotor removed currently. I have the axle nut out and the shaft is able to move around but I dont know what else I need to disconnect from the rear wheel assembly to get the axle to move enough to get the axle out of the wheel hub and the rear diff. I currently dont have enough room to slide out the axle. Please help.

Couple quick questions
1. What do i need to disconnect to be able to slide out the axle all theway from the wheel hub and then differential?
2. Does the axle slide right out from the differential once I have it free on the wheel hub side or do I have to disconnect anything else?

I think you have to pull the hub and then pull the axle through the assembly.

The lower control arm (long one) can have that bolt at hub removed and the back toe-in link can be removed at the end without the eccentric washer. These two will not affect alignment when removed at those locations. The hub is sort of heavy and you need to be sure when you pull it outward and tap the splined end of axle in that you have a way to keep it securely up an out of your way. The inboard end will have to pried out of rear end. It has a retainer ring and will pop out if pried between case and inner CV joint housing

When you go back together the long bolt at hub should be left out 1/2 inch or more so the serrations aren't pulled into the bushing. You let it down on the ground, blocks under tires or even ramps will work to get you more working room for tightening it, so the suspension is at normal laden height and then tighten and pull the bolt into bushing. This is the best way for any suspension bushing so the rubber is not twisted at the position it will live at. It is mandatory on any bushing with voids or that bushing will have a very short life due to those tearing readily when sheared too many degrees.
When you remove that bolt you will have to drive it out due to the bite of the serrated part into the bushing.

Another question. Sorry. Kinda new at this. I got the bolt off of what I hope was the back toe-in link (The long square bar) at the hub end where the eccentric washer wasnt.
As far as the lower control arm. Above you said (long one) I do see two pieces to the lower control arm. The longer one directly below the axle has one bolt at the hub but there is another one that connects to the hub but goes up toward the front of vehicle. Do I only need to remove the one bolt (at the hub) from the lca that is under the axle (The one that the rear spring sits on?) Or do I need to remove both?

I have usually only do those two and have someoen pry while I slip it out. It is easier if you remove the angled forward one. Be sure that one gets connected first as you will have to move hub around to be able to get bolt started. It is another one to tighten after vehicle is sitting on the wheels.

How is this coming? I had done this same project on my '05 XC90 V8 a couple of years ago. Have you gotten the CV Axle out of the wheel hub yet?
