It stays slightly open for air while idling. There is no idle air control valve on theses 2.5L engines.

Had the same question myself when I first dropped the ETM. I installed a new Bosch ETM last December and the valve on that unit is nearly the same as the defective unit.

There is more than enough gunk in there to account for the throttle plate to jam or stick.

I am certain that you could clean it and I would expect the throttle body to work fine after that.

Perhaps, after the O2 replacements, the system saw the oxygen level more accurately and had a greater need to close the throttle - hence the plate closing on the junk.

I also installed a new ETM (non-Volvo, non-Bosch) and found it and the original had a spring that pushed the plate to almost closed, and another spring that opened the plate from fully closed to the slightly open position. I also concluded this was the idle air feature.

I was trying to understand why my ETM only closed to 10% tracked via my Torque app. However, the new one has the same behavior.

Thanks, XC70Rider and EngineeringBloke. Both posts have been very helpful. I did go ahead and clean the unit in the pic. I haven't reinstalled yet, but it came pretty clean... amazingly. I'll pop a new gasket on there and hook her back up this week. I'll follow up with hopefully an all is well post. I can't remember if I heard it here, but removing the cooling fan helped immensely accessing the ETM. Incidentally, I did wonder if the replacement of the O2 sensors did require different activity from the ETM that it couldn't accommodate in its mucked up condition, which then threw the code that shut down the car. I just don't have the experiential intellectual archive to say definitively on my own.

Curious - in removing the wiring from the ETM, the connector shattered in my hand. Is there a fix for this, or am I forced to rig an alternative?

No time wasted, cleaning the ETM is not a waste of time.

Repair Harness for Volvo Electronic Throttle Body

Thanks, RHP for the info. Is this as scary a repair as it sounds in the description? I've never spent any repair time with the ECM before.

I cannot answer that because the description does not sound scary to me.

If the rest of the harness is in good shape you have an alternative.
Get a set of Pin extraction tools, go to a PnP extract the pins from a connector, then install the plastic connector on your old harness.

If you go to a shop that specializes in Automotive electronics, there is a good chance you can buy a new plastic connector or hire them to install one. The bill should not be much.

After breaking that same connector I installed a new 31409380 Harness myself. I didn't splice the wires but replaced them all leading back to the ECM. I got this aftermarket ECM extractor tool for less than $12 and it worked fine.

I think there's one included in the harness kit RickHaleParker referenced in the post above for $40 total. XC70Rider, was the install of the new harness at the ECM a relatively straight forward task?
