Thanks, I checked it out, looks like the right fit.

Just out of curiosity, on a scale from 1 to 10 where 1 is slight decrease in performance or fuel economy and 10 is permanent engine failure, how bad is a broken pintle cap, if the injector was installed in that state? What about a missing one?

0 on that scale.

0 on that scale.
Thanks. So I'm probably best off just leaving everything as is (other than replacing the O-rings).

FWIW, I had also emailed iPd asking about this, and this was their response:
iPd wrote:...that piece is not something that is available separately. The good news is that you really don't need it. it is very commonly broken anyway.
So, based on everyone's responses, it sounds like something I don't need to be concerned about.

Sounds totally unacceptable for a perfectionist ;)

I pulled fuel rail twice to fix that (and to clean/rebuild injectors while was there).

I sometimes exhibit perfectionist tendencies, but at this point that has given way to "I just want to start driving my freakin' car again, ASAP."

Dont worry, we will beat that out of you here. We even convinced one guy he can re-use his old engine oil...

There is a slight chance I will cruise by your way this week and can throw a coil your way if eBay is slow.

I just broke all of mine putting my fuel rail back in. Loosened the manifold to vacuum the pieces out. I assume these all just melt off anyways but would prefer to not have that crap laying around in there. Just bought 2 replacement kits on eBay. Par for the course on all that's happened to me on this pcv system replacement.

So about 'pintle caps'. On some injectors, there is a pin that projects out of the end of the injector (manifold side). There is a plastic piece shaped like a top hat (with a hole in the middle for the pintle pin to project through). That is appropriately called a pintle cap. On our Bosch injectors, the solenoid and any related pin is totally recessed and so does not need a pintle cap. Instead we just have a retaining washer that holds back the o-ring. But on the other hand, what are we going to call it.

On doing my injector o-ring renovation recently, the middle injector came out without the manifold side o-ring. I got that out from the manifold and saw the o-ring washer in two halves resting in the injector hole of the manifold. Using extreme care and caution, I removed the first half, before pushing the other half into the manifold. I tried to blow it out of the hole using strong words. After that, I took out the spark plug and tried to blow it out with canned air, unsuccessfully. I even pulled the fuel pump fuse and spun the engine (rag over the fuel line), but the half plastic washer is gone (for now).

I got a set of micro filters to go in the fuel rail end of the injectors with my o-ring kit, so I tried to remove one of the filters but the tool I used did not work. As this operation damaged the prior filter and I had concerns about what might have got past the filter and into the injector solenoid, I bought a replacement injector and put that in.

All in all, the car remained usable and did not burn down, but I was disappointed with my work. I am inclined to just buy 4 more injectors so that I can be assured that they are all equally new (more or less) and equally clean. At least I gained experience working on a new subsystem of the car.

A few MVS members including myself used this fuel injector kit with good success

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free-sh ... 58425.html

This kit contains a tool to remove the filters.
The caps in this kit are also a closer match to OEM than the kits on Ebay and Amazon.

The Ebay caps I used were slightly cone shaped, instead of flat but fitted well on the injector, held the o-ring and were still in place when I removed the fuel rail a couple of days after the install to switch out one injector with the bad filter.

However, if I had the aliexpress kit, I probably could have removed the microfilter with the kits filter extraction tool and not needed to buy a new injector!
