Dash went out...2002 V70 2.4 NT

Post by MDK »

Hey all... last week I started up the wagon and I went about 3 blocks and waiting to turn left everything on instrument cluster was asleep. No tach, fuel, etc. I banged on the dash and it all came back. Today.. I just got back from the store and the same thing happened. Banging... nothing. I took the instrument cluster out and unplugged it and plugged it in. Nothing.... I started it up and wiggled the wires and they came back on. I don't think it's the wiring harness...it the cluster itself. What should I do? MDK... I can't really see any burnt spots on the circuit board...eh

Some have success resoldering some of the components on the DIM board. The things we have to do to keep these cars on the road.

There are several SMD components that fail. Usually one of the big black chips will break the solder at their tiny legs, but also there are several tiny resistors that will burn or work intermittently. Ebay has several repair services for these clusters ("DIM repair service" for around $150), or we can swap a used DIM with similar numbers on the side. My 2003 S60 N/A has a 2002 or 2003 XC70 turbo DIM, it was plug and play, so it's good to match the years too. It will display the mileage from the donor car. Several used DIM are sold on Ebay and may be another option but there is a risk for non compatibility and also risk to get a DIM that has the same problem (all 2001-2003 will fail)

Thanks guys.. that's good info... I put it all back together and installed it. Got out my vida/ dice it had a handful of codes.. cleared those. Seems to be working now for the time being. Like I was saying.. Cincinnati has a lot of these in the junkyard. Like anywhere .. these cars/wagons are expensive to repair, so parts are readily available. MDK rolling on.. for the moment...eh
