Is it possible to put 98 T5 engine into 00 (Bastards) V70?

I feel like this answer has been answered a few times in comments here and there. But I can't seem to find it.

How hard would this be? I'm imagining it would involve swapping computers and part (or all) of the wiring harness. Completely doable? Or a pain?

1999 base come without CVVT so that is doable , but I think 2000 gets intake CVVT on the base, exhaust on turbo

You can swap cylinder heads of course

Hmmm... good to know! Thanks!! As for complete engine swaps? Not really doable, huh?

Oh crap. T5 into 1999

You transition from ME4 to ME7 so that’s going to rear a lot of ugly heads getting something that will drive the turbo and still match to VIN

Moving the engines will be the easy part...

Unless you want the helpful answer,,,yes, it will fit nicely in with the tailgate closed, too.

Suppose backstory is important here. Bastards 00 V70 is developing milky oil... It's an N/A Manual Transmission so not sure where else contamination could be coming from. Car is stage zero. The transmission is great.

We also have an early model T5 with an automatic transmission (early model: hydraulic tensioner) waiting to be re-purposed. Car has a rear main seal leak and a ps leak... We haven't really driven it much. (The Eurovan job from hell continues...though, things happen how they happen... and maybe it'll be that we can use the best parts of each car somehow? )

1. Do we pull the MT transmission and put that into the 98 T5 V70?
2. Pull the T5 engine and put that into the 00 V70?

I prefer 2 because, well, all the MT stuff is already there and the car is in better shape than the 98.

So, to do 2 would entail swapping
1. Engine
2. Exhaust
3. Computer
4. Various other things like coolant reservoir tank, power steering reservoir, etc.
(Which doesn't seem "too" challenging...") Maybe the speedometer?

What else? We have two complete working sets...

Might be more doable then first glance appears.

The '98 cars badged T5 used the B5234T3:
1997 - 2000 S70 T5, V70 T5 & C70 T5.
2000 - 2004 V70 II T5.
2001 - 2004 S60 T5

Get the engine family ID off both blocks. If you got a 2.3 in your '00 it should be B5234T3 which would mean the short blocks are identical.

PS:
Opps! missed the N/A. The '00 should be a B5244S.

Both engines have the same stroke 90mm. Bore is 81mm for the B5234T3 and 83 mm for the B5244S. Compression ratio is different, 8.5:1 vs 10.3:1, but the head's combustion chamber and the bore is the difference. I think he has a good chance of a successful swap if he does just a short block swap. Compression ratio might not be 10.3:1 but it should run and drive.

Here what it looks like to me.

1. Pull both engines.
2. Swap the heads.
3. install the B5234T3 in the '00.
4. Keep everything else from the '00.

This would get you a 2.3L N/A.

Before you get started post the two Engine Family IDs off the blocks.
You would want to have the heads off the '00 checked for cracks.

If you want to go turbo, that would be a lot more work and a different process. You would need a ECM out of a 2000 - 2004 V70 II T5 and you may need some reprogramming. Else you could have the '00 ECM reflashed with the T5 bin and then reprogrammed to work with the rest of your car.

It might be worth pulling off the oil cooler and pressure testing it. Rare failure but cheap/ easy to diagnose and replace.

Other than engine internals, it is the only place where oil and coolant mix on a manual.

I think I would pull the cylinder head on the S70 and rework it. Need help? I haven’t done enough top end work on Volvo and could use a “skills honing”

Compression test first, inspect plugs.

Is car still driveable to The Eurovan Volvo Centre In NJ?

A 1999 NA is a B5254S not a B5244S nonetheless it's doable.

Sump on B5254S has no oil cooler so sumps should match with the 1998 T5 which had oil cooler on the radiator.

The oil port on the B5234T going to the turbo would need a bung to block it.

Low compression pistons (8.5 to 1) on a non turbo would make it a total slug

High compression pistons (10.3 to 1) on a turbo would make it detonate all day long.

Head combustion size is identical from turbo to non turbo so there would be no compensation for the mismatch in aspiration

Engine management system on 1999 non turbo is Denso with Denso MAF and ECM. You can't turn it into a turbo unless you rewire the engine bay

Not relevant to this swap but you can’t plug the cooler on the biscuit type as it is full flow...I believe it’s the first stop for the oil after the oil pump, then gets sent to the filter

Mike,..I thought my 1999 NA had a biscuit cooler , but maybe I’m wrong. It makes sense for no turbo, no cooler though.

Hmmm- my P2 NA has the biscuit oil cooler, so it isnt just a turbo thing.

My 1999 S70 NA does not have a biscuit oil cooler.
