Power Mods For 850 Turbo

Post by tandemzz » Wed May 22, 2019 11:25 pm

I have a 1995 850 Turbo. I'm new to forced induction motors and volvos. Bought it as a daily but I wanna make some power out of it. I was looking around for normal modifications but there doesn't seem to be many for the 850t. I'm looking into IPD's ECU Flash CLAIMING to make up to 63hp more or something along those lines. What other things can I do for simple power. Its stock right now but I'd like to be making around 350hp.

Hey!

There's absolutely an immense amount of things you can do. I mean... the block is good for about 1200 hp, but that might not be "simple"... In my opinion, the 850 turbo models are some of the most modifiable vehicles around, with some of the best availability of parts and misc, both OEM, aftermarket, modified, cheap, expensive or in between. :)

For starters, you have to check out the Performance forum here, and read the "Fast Friday" posts. Those are excellent starting points.

- Get your car to "Stage 0", i.e. good working order. New ignition components; rotor, cap, wires, plugs. Get Bosch rotor/cap, Bougicord wires and Iridium plugs. Gap to 0.025. Service the PCV system (lots of write-ups here at MVS on this, and the "Stage 0" concept).

My car has a RIP kit from do88, silicon hoses (both air and coolant) from Samco, Forge piston style compressor bypass valve (CBV), new Pierburg turbo control valve (TCV), and it's tuned to about 0.9 - 1 bar (~13 psi). It doesn't make 350 hp, but then again, it's an automagic, rated for about 310 hp max. I think it's about 285, but that's a seat-of-the-pants dyno comparing to my previous ones, and it's a daily driver with reliable power that comes on quick with the 15G stock turbo - I take the smile off the faces of beamer boys all the time. ;)

For 350 HP, you'd probably want a do88 "Big Pack" intercooler and plumbing (or equivalent), 19T turbo, turboback exhaust, larger injectors (greens?), and either tune it yourself if you do that kind of thing, or a Stage 2 or 3 from either BSR, ARD or some other reputable tuner. I don't know if iPD has a tune to match that goal, but ARD and BSR can help, iirc. You might also want new internals for that kind of thing, but people have run stock internals on higher numbers than those.

Not sure what you mean by "normal modifications", but those are some basics, at least. :)

IPD's tune is very nice, but they should have been less conservative. it adds about 30hp with stock exhaust and intercooler. Milage is the same. high price though. boost is around 12lbs. You can mess with the waste gate and get a little more but the 15g runs out of huff at open throttle max rpm.. . I haveThe IPD tuned ECM for a '95 you can have for 250 shipped. Its for EGR equipped cars as yours is unless removed.
