'98 S70 is at 95k miles - what do I need to save up to fix next?

When was the timing belt done last?

Timing belt was done about 18 months ago at ~78k, I bought the car about 4 years ago with 72 and a bit on the clock, I put 10k on just in October with a family situation out of state (md to ohio and back every weekend for 5-6 weeks). Pcv, MAF, fuel pump, tires, torque mounts, and rear brakes all done in the last 8-10 months. Had my mechanic do basically a stage-0 in the lead up to the Timing Belt.

Check your PVC for pressure, if your catch that before it gets pressure, you save a lot of money.

Are you a DIY chap/ gal? Many here have picked a wrench for the first time with guidance both online and sometimes just meeting new people

I am slightly diy, but I have to acknowledge that I usually think I'm more capable that I am / have tools/time to be. In the past when I didn't have my own car and my options were to diy repairs on parents extra cars or just get rides, I did full brakes/filters/plugs on a 95(?) Tracer which was fine.

Take a look at all 3 links / Videos for a Transmission Flush. In 2012 I purchased my first Volvo a 98 S70 T5 with around 230K miles for $500 dollars. The fluid was pretty much chocolate. The 2.5 or so years I owned it I did two complete flushes and the car drove so well after each flush.

1) This is a 98 S70 - Has the metal retainer for the transmission hoses upper and lower. You will use the upper hose for the flush

2) Video is of a 2000 S70 with the green clip instead of the metal clip on the 98 S70. Again, either way it is the top hose. The pictures in the above link are quite large not giving you a full picture if you are new to Volvo DIY. This video will help.

If you think the ATF is really old, drain first from below. You want to look a time the chunkies that’s cone out to get a feel for transmission is wearing. The first drain can be quite nasty, not to worry.

About 4 liters comes out, and you replace in kind with 3.5 liters, then top off following the check ATD level procedure in manual, top off to get it right.
