I needed replacement lamps and covers for my 98 S70 GLT. Found them for half the price of Volvo dealer.

Go to......... http://lampsandlenses.com/.

Are they as thick as the Volvo ones ? Is the light pattern the same (SAE) ?

I don't know, I was not able to buy them. Lost my job. I'm sure they can tell you though. Why on earth would you ask that? :?:

I have the original ones and they are both cracked, that's why I'm asking.
They are also frosted by the sand spreaded on the road during winter.

About the pattern; the E-codes ones are much better than SAE in my opinion

For the umpteenth time you CANNOT put an E code lens in front of a US reflector, it doesn't work.
The pattern will throw light everywhere except where it's supposed to!
You HAVE to have an actual E-code reflector (ie; the light itself)

Didn't know that one. Ok so I'll stick with stock ones, thanks.

The reflector in the 850 and S70's headlights has nothing to do with the beam pattern, it's a simple parabolic reflector that does absolutely nothing other than reflect light straight forward. All of the shaping of the beam is done by refracting elements in the lens itself.

The headlights in the S70 and 850 cars do not use reflector optics. All of the beam pattern comes from the lens. You can tell this by the way the lenses are translucent rather than completely clear.

Simplified explanation here.

If the lights used reflector optics, you would be correct, but all of the optics for these lights are in the lens itself. The reflector is a simple parabolic reflector that does not play any part in beam shaping.

Of course, you cannot put a clear lens from a reflector-optic light on a lens-optic lamp nor vice-versa, but replacing the US-spec lenses from a lens-optic system (like that of the 850 and early S/V70) with the ECE-spec lenses from ECE-spec lens-optic systems (like those of the Euro 850 and early S/V70) is absolutely and 100% acceptable and most certainly will result in a proper ECE beam pattern.
