Airbag/SRS Light won't turn off

Post by sryme »

Recently I dismantled my dashboard to get to a short circuit causing my sunroof to pop-up constantly. I fixed the problem with the sunroof but in the process of dismantling the dash, I had to unplug the passenger airbag. My SRS light is constantly on... does anyone know how to get it to turn off or is there really a problem?

If the airbag was disconnected and you turned on the key the computer has a code in it that must be cleared. Had the same thing on my 93 when I did some dash work, on my car you can clear the computer with the onboard computer terminal - found the procedure by searching the net. If is is 1996 or newer you will need an OBD II tool to reset the code or have a mechanic do it. Hope this helps.

Thank you. It's not in my Haynes manual so I'll have to check with a Volvo dealer.

Not sure about the 94 but on the 96 the ABS runs a system check every time you start the car. If you get an ABS error it will sometimes clear by shutting off the car and restarting. You may also have a problem that needs to be corrected with the ABS. I need to clean my sensors about every 25 - 30 K miles because of metal build up on the sensors that trip the sensor into thinking that there is a problem with the system. Here is a link to another thread detailing the way to correct this:

'96 854 - died an early death with 184K miles. Killed by the front end of an LTD on a suicide mission (T-boned and both cars totaled).
