PCV vent hose broken

Driving without that hose will cause a vacuum leak. For a temporary fix get a matching diameter vacuum hose at the auto store. You can mount the temporary hose with worm clamps until you install the Genuine Volvo hose. You'll need to remove the IGN coil cover to mount the top end of the hose then mount the bottom end onto the oil trap.

As mentioned earlier the hose can be installed without removing the intake manifold. After you install a hose give it the 'Glove Test'.

To complete the circle...

- The same hose was used in Volvo 850 1998 S70/V70.
- Then around 2003-2004 or so, Volvo decided to go plastic, maybe saving a few grams of weight of the car! Then they discovered that it cracked soon. Then they went back to rubber hose.
- Trick is: get a socket and enlarge the lower end a bit and let it sit. By the time you install it, it slides right on top of the oil trap. Put the clamp on the hose first.
- Leave the cosmetic cover off the car (store it on your garage shelf). This way you have quick access to that hose, ignition coils and check for leak from Oil Cap etc.

Actually, my 2005 XC90 2.5T came like that w broken plastic hose (maintained by dealer!).

No error codes. No running issues.

The Top part just releases crank case gas.
The Bottom part is a mix of crank case gas and vacuum effect.

Yeah the car is running great and I have no lights on

How could I change this hose without removing the intake manifold ?

You snake it down through the path, the trick being to expand the end so that it slips over the connection on the box easier than if the rubber is in its relaxed state, The socket trick above covers that.

then you work a hose clamp down on it - mirrors and good lighting help.

Paying someone $150 an hour to do this is the option - but it is not rocket surgery.

Do i simply pull on the lower hose to remove it ?

I would imagine you should be getting some kind of code running it the way you are as part of the emission system is completely inoperative.

As to damage - that has been debated. Some say the pressure is needed some say it is not (whether it is negative or positive). Other than that you will have the blow by gas that is being "contained" - and its oil all over the car engine.

I agree with the others - if that hose looks like that you may need a PCV system overhall and "crud" clean out.

You need To get the clamp of the box, too. It’s possible TO do this under the intake manifold but it isn’t fun.

I’ve gotten old and have joined the “remove parts that block access “ club.

I removed the engine cover and I took a picture

Does something look abnormal out there ? I guess the oil there is because of my busted hose..

I tried to make a quick fix but its damn hard to have my hand out there and tighten a clamp. I will buy the hose wich goes there and try to install it. Removing the clamp on the oil box sounds pretty tough without removing the IM , Is it possible to do it with hands only or I need to find a way to pry it with a screwdriver ?

Been trying to remove the lower part of the hose at the box : my hands are a bloody mess and I just cant seem to find a way to remove this damn clamp , the face where I should pry is facing the exact opposite of me.

Any tips on how to remove it or is there a safe way to destroy it without breaking the box itself ?
