Another glove box question

Post by GlennG2759 »

My '94 850 seems to have locked its glove box on its own. I got pulled over by the police on my way from picking up a headlight bulb which was out. Unfortunately my registration and insurance card were iin the glove at the time. I do have the 2 keys, one that won't unlock the glovebox and one that will. He gave me 48 hrs. to bring to bring proof to the station. I saw Roberts video on opening stuck glove compartments, but are there any other options than drilling a hole. No he didn't give me a ticket, yet. Thanks in advance

Good God. He can pull both up in NY on the computer in 7 seconds. I don't even carry my license, registration, or insurance card anywhere.

Let me know if I can send pictures to help spring it free. Maybe you can drill up from bottom somehow?

Originally being from nj, I never could understand why in ny they ask you for your registration card, when a duplicate is stuck right on the drivers side window. Proof of insurance I can understand, even license could be gotten through registration, it's not the old days when you could do 75 mph on thruway as long as your in the right lane. I'm gonna get underneath and see what I can take apart. Thanks

they only ask so they can see if you'r sluring your words, and they love to look in the glove compartment while you rummage for your documents in case a gun or pipe falls out.

There are several methods. I used the "saw through the hoop" method on all of mine. It properly corrects the problem without defacing the car but it is a bit more time consuming and expensive than just drilling a hole and using something to push the release.

Still, start to finish it is only a couple of hours at worst to do it right.

Sounds like you ran into an officer just trying to meet a quota.

That system is online with >99.99% reliability. He's likely putting the burden on you in order to get an easy ticket win. If he was truly worried he wouldn't have let you ride away. He likely already looked you up based upon the information you provided in the encounter. Worst case scenario you go to court and they change that sucker into parking on the pavement provided you can provide the required documentation.

It really irks me that NYS is an electronic signature state and yet won't allow us to be able to provide digital copies of driver's licenses - which they CAN verify in their car.

I found with mine that if you jiggle the handle it falls open eventually.

I put a hole through mine like Roberts video. Works like a charm. But I also removed the door and leave the glove box open. It wouldn't be one of my P80's without an open cubby hole. Also it's a good excuse to install larger cup holders. I use some of the mounting points for the glove box to bolt on cup holders :-D
