That looks great! Did you use any solvent to clean up the trim?
Thanks! After scraping I did some light sanding with sandpaper and a Dremel sanding drum where needed. Then I cleaned up the flakes and dust with a shopvac followed by a dusting with a rag with isopropyl alcohol to give the tape the best chance to stick.

I didn't dare do more. The plasticizers are mostly gone from the plastic after 21 years and I didn't want to make it even worse.

Over the past few days I have been working on making a 3d printed door trim piece. Specifically the piece that surrounds the inner door handle. I wanted to start with something simple to learn from it and hopefully start designing more of the complex parts. For now I am prototyping using PLA in black since I have it lying around. The final piece will be printed in a color that best matches the tan interior.

Today was my 4th iteration of the design and finally produced a piece that fits quite well.

Please excuse the duck taped panel. She survived a tornado so she gets a pass.

Nicely done! 3D printing fascinates me... I love that we have the ability to reproduce these sorts of parts now. Maybe the material will be better and last longer than the old Volvo plastic!

That is the goal! I'm thinking the final part should be made of ABS or PETG. I've only worked with ABS but both are supposed to have high heat tolerance which is a necessity here in Texas.

It's not so much heat and cold tolerance that's the issue. The plastic needs to withstand extreme temperature changes. On top of that, the plastic HAS to be UV stable, which is expensive and hard to do.

Nice work on the trim piece. I really think 3D printing is the future for reproducing old car parts.

Definitely. That’s one innovation for the automotive world I can really get behind. As for the other things that people say are the future of the industry... like electric cars... not so much.

Running into a new trend with the T5M. Occasionally, starter will not engage. Turn ken to POSII, all the lights come one, fuel pump primes, everything works, turn to start and click. Car will bump start via popping the clutch. Today, I was facing downhill into a parking stop. I kept turning the key and eventually I heard the starter click on a few times until it finally started working again as it should. Thoughts?

In my research I came across ASA filament which is like ABS but much more UV resistant and intended for outdoor use. It's a bit more expensive but not much. It's like $10 more per roll than ABS. The real challenge is finding good colors.

Worthy of its own thread but try the bypass wire to isolate the problem to the starter or the switch/wiring.

'remote starter connection' should be a good search string

That 3d printed part looks good

I got a good deal on some discs and pads for the V70, still need a few things including the infamous 302mm bracket
