My trans played up for 2 weeks now. At first during only warmer weather and now it goes to limp mode every 1.5kms or thereabouts. Tried a new Magnefine filter today. The old one was pretty clogged.

Appendum: turns out the fluid wasn't high enough to register on the dipstick. Topped up. Test drive to follow.

30K extra from poking some holes wasn't bad. Looks like the solenoids need to be done. Fun on the way.......

hows it going, did the full gibbons flush help and still doing well ?
Im at 170,000mile and I mostly see suggestions saying not to touch the fluid as new fluid might kill the Transmission (create slippage)

Looking at picking up an P2 V70 T5. I have seen a few that have they have transmissions issues, such as "slipping" or "won't engage into gear", typically 01-03 years. Has anyone purchase a P2 with these issues and fixed them without having to replace the transmission? I've read about the solenoid replacements and B4 upgrade. It seems clearing the filter screen is a relatively new realization? Are any of the Sonnax upgrades worthwhile? I'd hate to buy a project just to have to end up replacing the entire trans, but we are talking sub $1000 cars here...

That's what this thread is about. The 3 large Solenoids replacement is more about solving shift quality.

When other solenoids fail you get limp mode

You can find a clean P2 for $2500-3000 that has been maintained; once you go sub $1500 you have to be ready to drop $500/10 hours of labor for a transmission. You can score with a drain and fill to recover an abused one, but thats the Roulette wheel of Volvo you spin on the cheap ones.

If you can test drive it cold, get it hot, and it shifts well, you probably can dodge the bullet.

Mine is still going good. I still get a flare in downshifting once in a while, but it is very seldom. I have probably 5,000 miles since the flush. I also have relatively low miles when I did it-- ~108,000 miles.

I drilled a hole in the bottom of mine stuffed a homemade flexable tube hooked to my shop vac and sucked out the filter, put in new transmax fluid. And that was at 180,000 miles.I am now at 245,000 miles and was just thinking the other day.that its due to get the trany fluid changed.MY CAR IS A 2001 s60 T5.I have done this now to a total of 8 volvo s60's both turbo and non turbo with the same outcome.Heck on my s60 t5 i just put a manual turbo boost control on and Wow this car amazes me.

Any chance you could help me with where to actually drill the hole? How precise do we need to be....? I’m hoping my 2001 XC70 can be revived. I’ve changed the solenoids and then the entire valve body, but am realizing the problem all along was the filter....
