That’s how they unload the trashed ones on the unsuspecting. You need a $3000-5000 budget to fix them. Or more , if you ask Neil.

Take your time, there are lots out there. It’s worth traveling out west for us anyway, if the rightcar comes up, from a corrosion perspective.

The main thing to take into account when buying these cars is that much of the rear end mechanicals are now N/A. From bushings to brakes depending on years. A 98/99 may be the slightly better options as the 00 has 1 year only rear brakes that are N/A. There was a retro fit kit Volvo had from a P2 model that could be fitted if all else failed.

Much of the rear suspension bushes are now un-available as is the lower front torque rod for all the AWD versions. IPD do a replacement rear section of the torque rod at a silly price.

Up here where there is a lot of liquid de-icer used on the roads it kills the rear sub-frame as it eats right through the aluminum where the steel mounting bolts pass through the frame. Volvo did not think to fit spacers to prevent the 2 materials reacting. Check this carefully at all the mounting bolts to the steel frame at the rear. When they get bad the frame cracks.

Buying from a dry state is good in many ways, but the downsides can be the rubber bushes are rotted out. Took me 9 months to get some from Volvo but not all were available. On Swedespeed I have seen some guys having polybushes specially made but not for general availability.

Many would say a good T-5 FWD is a better car as it is easier to maintain and without the complex AWD it is lighter and can be made to go quicker.

I wish you luck if you wish to buy one, but have the car carefully checked over if you can find someone who knows them.

Yup you guys are right. I guess I lucked out with my 850 I bought from Conn. nice shape underneath, must have been garage kept most of its life, but very litttle maintenance done to it. Patience is a virtue and I am willing to travel to find the right one which in truth would probably be 2004-2007 V70 black/cream. As far as being sawed in half, it's me not my 850. Talked the wife into a wagon because new black lab pup won't fit good in the back of her sub Outback. Thank for your advice guys.

Again, if you are looking at an 04-07 AWD V70, be aware that if they have the adjustable suspension, that is also expensive to repair. Also have the Haldex AWD system checked and serviced to make sure it is working as it should.

The 'R' version is also to be avoided unless you are a masochist for potential problems that even dealers can have difficulty fixing other than parts swapping.

I wish up luck on your search.

I wonder how many of these Rs are getting unloaded up here with cracked rear frames. If you sell a car like that to someone, you suck and your ***sack should be speed-bagged with a Crescent wrench. (Borrowing from another forum)
