So, it turns out I have I have 2 bearings going bad.. the a/c and the tensioner pull plus a failing fuel pressure sensor..

When you had the serpentine belt off did you spin the tensioner pulley and listen to it? With the engine idling, a well placed (CAREFULLY placed) stethoscope or long screwdriver held to your ear can often zero in on a component with a bad bearing.

You could also run the engine briefly with the serp belt removed and at least narrow down the possibilities to either something associated with the accessory drive system or the timing belt system.

As above, with lots of caution the quickest way is to listen the pulleys - myself I use a simple hose - it really works www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVWY2fMzrpc

As chrism says, the right way is to spin each pulley by hand with the belt off. If you don't feel about removing the belt completely, you can still just release the tension like here www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTi558-Q9ZI and grab each pulley with two fingers and turn it left right.

But being a costly R engine, I would surely look at the timing belt components as well. You mention 2 things: a belt kit 5 year ago, and a water pump 2 years ago. Do you happen to know which brands were used ? Saying this, because all failed water pumps on these S60 happen to be inexpensive aftermarket ones that jammed somewhere after 10-20K miles.

Thanks Oragex...yep... well I got this R this way. It was like that from day one. So I found a power steering pump in the scrap yard for 30$ from a 1999 xc70... instead of a plastic pulley I have a steel one. Haha... and I was able to replace the idler tensioner pulley/ bearing with out removing it from the engine. things got alot quieter. Volvo of Cincinnati replaced the water pump 2 winter's ago...at the price of 900$ ... but it has a lifetime parts and labor warranty. A guy up in Dayton Ohio had an R car with 428,000 miles on it. Last summer he was asking 2800$ for it... yeah right. You can ask away... doesn't mean I gotta pay.. so the last thing is clutch bearing on the a/c . It blows cold air ,,of course Volvo wants 600$ and 4 hrs labor at 155$ each. I found a OEM Volvo a/c compressor on eBay for 95$ plus the governor. What is the percentage of THAT mark-up? ... rolling on
