my 88 760 turbo seems to have an ignition cylinder problem.
Put in the key and i will not turn tryed the spare key and it will not turn. we tryed moving the steering wheel back and forth while trying to turn the key and no go .. I took it all apart but as per the book I can not remove the cylinder without the key turned to the #1 position ..... Anyone know how go get the cylinder out without turning the key ?

Well since i have no response to my post I have done a little bit of my own home work and found that the computer cut key/ignition cylinder are the same part number from 1988-1997 on the ( This is for the higher end model volvo's) I bought an Ignition cylinder from a 94 850 and from my Double checking ( calling the Volvo dealer ) the part numbers are the same !
Now I have to Drill out my old ignition cylinder or at least get it to turn to the #1 position so i can just push in the tab and pull it out !
This is supposed to be a very common problem ..... does anyone have any tips on getting out the old cylinder without destroying my steering column?

Many of the cylinders are held in by a little pin with a spring behind it. If you can find a hole in the lock that the cylinder fits into, push a nail or whatever fits into the hole. If you feel something "giving" inward you probably have found the pin. While pushing in the pin, pull out on the cylinder.

Yeah ..... your right ! If you read the previous post's you will understand that I am totally aware of that! The key needs to be in the #1 position in order to release the cylinder but if you cannot turn the key you cannot push in this little pin to release the cylinder! It must be drilled out !

Sorry, but not sure what the #1 position is. I did an English car last week and the could pop the pin and pull the cylinder without a key....so guess that would be in the "off" position.

I should have specified that the #1 position is the accessory position (one click forward of the ignition cylinder)
I am told that front plate is hardened steel I wonder what to drill this with ?
carbide might work well but is very brittle and will break on me easily.

well i completed yet another project with basically no valuable input ( that I didn't already know ) so here is the final run down of events if this should ever happen to you !
Words of wisdom ... " NEVER try and steal a Volvo " there is a drill resistant plate on the front of the ignition cylinder and it is very hard to drill through!
I ended up using a stone and my 20,000 rpm rotary tool to grind my way through this plate as the Cobalt and high speed drill bits just danced around and wouldn't cut through the front plate ! . make sure to grind a hole big enough that your bit will not catch an edge of it either or you will either hurt your wrist or shatter your drill bit ! " Do not attempt to use a Carbide drill bit as they are too brittle and will break off if you are not dead on ... you will have a heck of a time getting out the broken end" this was advise from a reputable machine shop supplyer that my wife works for.
You must cut in right under the #1 position so you can push the tab down and release the ignition cylinder just like you would if you were able to turn the key to the #1 position and push down the tab !
this Job took me 6 hours and I only did it myself because I did not want to pay the $789.00 plus parts that the Locksmith quoted me !
Didn't Even cost me $100.00 parts, drill bits and grinding stones all together !
