I don't think I could have made that more complicated if I had tried. Why they didn't just use two relays, one common 12V supply, and then ECU logic to close the relays will remain a Swedish mystery.

I have no idea. Seems like it would be most logical to have like you said a single wire leave the relay and go to the fan. Maybe that wasn't an available option when they were designing these cars in the late 80's? Or maybe they wanted two wires in case one failed??? I have no idea. The computer does decide if power goes to which side of the relay so it sems like they had the technology.

It hasn't.
I did take the car hauler and go get an 850 wagon from there because it was free. You just have to observe three rules:
1) Go early and be gone by 10am before the bad people start to stir.
2) Go well equipped.
3) Bring someone equally well equipped for backup.

Of those 3, the first one is most likely to get you in and out in one piece.
