1998 S/V70 I let the smoke out of my cooling fan motor...9497929

Post by clarkerussell »

Hello all, I just pulled into my house and it looks like my radiator fan has bit the dust. Smoke coming out of the motor, fan blades frozen, wires melting, relay is HOT... I quickly disconnected from the harness, but I need a new fan. Do I need to look at replacing other item that might have been damanged? I'm thinking the relay or any other items.

Also, where is the best place to get a replacement fan?

Trying to find something local for a quick fix... I see a few options for new aftermarket ones:

Autozone has a VDO one for about $153 (VDO is OEM, right?)
Napa has their own brand, (but the pics are the same as the Dorman one) for $162
Amazon has a Dorman one for $127 (2 day delivery though...)

Oddly the NAPA and Dorman one says it's for non-turbo use only. Is the fan different, or just the shroud (or are the rally all the same)?

Anyone have experience with the VDO unit?

Well, it looks like the VDO part number (FA70302) is not actually available...

My opinion of dorman is worse than eating a dog turd rolled in powered sugar and calling it a jelly doughnut.

If I was a betting man I would guess it

1. It wouldn't fit right but you could force it to with a small mod or a bit of extra effort.

B. The connector didn't feel quite right when plugging in.

Thirdly. If it works out of the box, you'll be buying a new one just after the warranty runs out...

Buy OE, OEM or proven better. Dorman makes none of those.

I agree Dorman stinks, there just don't seem to be many options out there. That being said, the Dorman on on Amazon shows a 12 month warranty, but the NAPA one is lifetime. They use the same pictures so I'm assuming they are the same part. but at least you can take it back to NAPA for an exchange...

Regardless, I have found a few at some local junk yards for cheap. I'm probably going to pick up one or two tomorrow instead of dropping $160 on the NAPA one... We'll see what happens.
