Petrol door won't lock

Hey all...MDK here. So kind of a new problem I've been working on. 2002 V-70 base model. Some Volvo's have the gas door button on the dash.. mine doesn't. It has the little locking motor and some one said it has a relay in rear electronic module? If I new what to do I wouldn't be asking. Can anyone give me the run down? I've replaced the motor and the relay...I guess I replaced the right relay... but I'm notorious for using junkyard parts..to a fault...

According to Volvo owners manual, your 2002 V70 has a fuel door button just below the HL switch.

In Europe I've never seen one with that button. The fuel door locks a couple of minutes after the car, the exact time can be set using Vida.

In Europe that switch operates the heated third seat. A rare option worth keeping a lookout.

Okay guys...so on mine ..it just has a blank. I'll check vida rattnalle and see if I can get into that setting .. maybe the relay or the little door motor I put in is bad. Hey abscate...I read your other post...90 thousand total family miles and 60 personal per year... that's still a lot Captain!!

Just found this picture on google. Not sure how do you unlock it without the button ? Maybe such models don't have a locking setting ?

These small motors are notorious for going bad. Sometimes they will unlock but not lock. It's two small contacts inside that get loose ( see at the end )

A trick with some junkyard parts is the small circle with two digits in the center stamped on most parts: this is the manufacturing date, ex 1I2 would be 2012, so a more recent part. Not all parts have this circle but many do. An exception are the ignition coils: only the original ones have the circle, the replacement ones don't

Many cars came without the fuel door unlock button. If you have front fog lights, that spot has the fog light button.

Those w/o the button are controlled thru programming. I know I read this in the past, but I can't find the reference right now. I believe the locking/unlocking is via the REM. As mentioned earlier, you may be able to reprogram via VIDA.

MDK, have you checked the fuel door lock fuse in the rear compartment? I believe it also controls your rear door locks.

Also, there is a YouTube video (2005 XC70) where the problem was the little black gear in the fuel door lock motor had some teeth broken off, hence the locking mechanism couldn't go in and out. If you have your original out of the car (assuming you are now using a junkyard replacement), take it apart and check the gear.

One last thing, my door locks only after the car has been parked and locked for 10 minutes, or if I drive it and drive > 3 mph (maybe 10 mph?). It doesn't lock when I use the remote or key in door...only 10 minutes later. Must be original programming from the factory.

I don't know if your car has the locking fuel cap door if you don't have the button on the headlight switch. My S60 doesn't have one, and that door doesn't lock. Our XC90 has the button, and that door locks after a few minutes to driving off from the gas station. I really don't like that design though, so many times it won't lock, then sometimes it requires multiple presses of the button to unlock it. Then if it doesn't lock, it'll swing open while driving.
My P80s' gas door locks are much more reliable!

Mine unlocks when the car is unlocked and locks ten minutes after the car is locked. Or it would if the door hadn't had the little lock loop broken off.

Thanks all...I really appreciate all the support, you know. In the owners manual they don't tell what the fuses are for at the rear electronic module... convenient. The tab on the door is good...so I'll continue digging and let you know what I come up with....
