Volvo Repair Database DIY 2005 XC90 Driver Seat Belt Buckle

My Driver Seat Belt Buckle needs to be replaced.

I saw some info on XC70:

Can someone confirm for me if:
- The procedure for XC90 is the same as XC70.
- Any special precaution to prevent the SRS dash light from turning on?

No special procedures other than to not have the connector unplugged under front of seat with key on. You can get everything but the connector swap done and then turn off ignition, wait 5 min and then disconnect battery before you unplug the seat gang connector.
Your biggest challenge with the buckle is wire routing and getting the buckle connector out of the gang connector under front edge of seat.

Thanks to jimmy57 for the guidance.

* PN for Seat Belt is 6841697, $65 at dealer, or amazon (some dealers sell through amazon, ebay etc.). It is reversible to fit both the driver and pass sides.

* Tools: 10-mm wrench for battery terminal, 13-mm socket, Torx #50 socket, and a 12-inch long piece of wood to prop the seat upward.

PROCEDURE:

1. See note by jimmy57 above: don’t d/c battery until ready for the green connector.

2. Move the whole seat backward to expose the front bolts. Remove the plastic cover as shown (press the tab down first) to expose the 13-mm bolts.

3. Now move the whole seat forward to expose the rear bolts. Use screwdriver to pry as shown.

4. Now, move the whole seat back (where you lean your back against) all the way forward. If you don’t do this step, when you prop the seat up (to expose the green connector), the headrest will touch the ceiling.

5. Go to the trunk and d/c battery ground cable. Don’t close the tailgate b/c I don’t know how to open it mechanically with battery disconnected!

6. Move the whole seat it rearward to expose the buckle mounting bolts (T50). Undo the bolt.

7. Now prop the whole seat up using the piece of wood.

8. Note how the wiring and zip ties and copy that.

9. Look at the new part, you will see 2 tiny tabs. Now you will know where to insert the small flat screwdriver to d/c the green connector.

10. Re-install everything. Re-connect the battery ground cable. Don’t forget to zip tie and to reset your clock (using the knob on the instrument cluster).

That is it, not too difficult!

I cannot remove the seat belt buckle's electrical plug. The tabs are not cooperating. Can a 2004 be that much different? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Any photo of the NEW part so we can help?
Just look at the new part, it will give you some clues on how to undo the old part.

Can I just break the top off of the old tabs to remove the plug?

Here's the new plug. Obviously the tabs need to be pushed down on the old plug to remove it (I'm assuming).

I gave up and took the car to a Volvo garage. They informed me that the entire connector box needed to be removed and disassembled. So, essentially the connection unplugs from the front! They didn't say it had to be done this way since I messed up the tabs while trying to unplug from the rear.

I just completed this repair today on the driver's side of my 2006 2.5T. First of all, thanks to the OP for this thread, as I wouldn't have attempted this repair (or completed it myself) without the step-by-step guide! Now, I kind of also hate the OP for tempting me not to just take it in to my indy for this. ;) In terms of technical stuff, it's a no brainer, but the fiddly stuff is definitely annoying.

Only a couple of things to add to the thread. Getting the rear, outside plastic cover off the seat rail was much harder for me than the other three - needed more cajoling. To add to step 6 above, there is a piece of plastic trim that is attached to the inside of the seat and partially obstructing access to the T50 bolt. You need to take off a T30 screw at the end of the trim towards the front of the seat to be able to swing it out of the way and fully access the T50 bolt. I actually needed to flip the front of the seat up and brace it (as in step 7 for the back of the seat) in order to have the room to remove this T30 screw.

For the connector, there is only one release tab to push back on the bottom left of the old connector (which you need to push to the left), and which you can see in the final picture above. The OP implies that there are two tabs, but there is only one. If you need a reference, look at the empty connector slot to the left of the one where you insert the green connector in the picture – there is a little black tab in the bottom left that you push to the left to release the connector. The PITA is that there is so little space down there and you need to get two hands in – one with the tiny flat head to push the tab and the other pulling on the wire to get the old connector out. I had to use some coordination and force to eventually get it out.

Hopefully this is helpful additional information for those who attempt this in the future. Again, truly thanks for the OPs picture-guided step-by-step to make this job possible to understand!

This helped immensely. Thank you.
