Wiring, fun with colors! 89 740
Hi all, I have an 89 740 Wagon. I got the radio code today and punched it in. Turns out it's a 92 radio. Anyhow, only the pass. side speaker works. I've figured out that the green wire powers the antenna, do any of you have a dash wiring diagram for this car or know which wire is for what? Off the top of my head, I remember a blue wire, a yellow wire with a white stripe, a white wire, an orange wire, a green wire with a red stripe, and a black wire. There may be more. None of the other speakers are working. Another possible solution would be balance and fade, how do I change the balance and fade on a CR-718 radio? Another issue altogether, is that neither of the arrows work when you use the turn signals. The hazzard light flashes when you turn left. The signals on the outside all work like they're supposed to. I had the cluster out just now and I really don't see any cut or crossed wires. Help! It's driving me crazy! Wiring issues really get to me.

Are you looking for a complete diagram for the dash or just the radio?a dash wiring diagram
Is it a 'base' radio or does it have the amplifier?

It has the amplifier. Someone somewhere installed a later model radio. 14 pin connection with the following wires. The parentheses note what I think the wire is for. Again the following list is for the wires coming out of the back of the radio.
1-Black
2-Blue w/yellow stripe
3-Grey w/ White stripe
4-Pink w/Black Stripe
5-Not Used
6-White
7-Grey
8-Yellow w/Brown Stripe
9-Green w/Brown Stripe (12+)
10-Black (Ground)
11- Pink w/Black stripe
12-Yellow w/Grey Stripe (Power to antenna)
13-Green
14-Not used
Now the wires in the dash are completely different. There are nine of them with two being aftermarket speaker wire. When the aftermarket wire is connected to the #4 pink/black wire, and the #2 blue/yellow wire, the front right speaker works. The other seven wires in no particular order are as follows. The parentheses note which wire in the 14 pin connection they are crimped to.
1-Green w/Grey stripe (Yellow w/grey stripe)
2-Blue (Yellow w/Brown Stripe)
3-White (Grey)
4-Green w/Red stripe (green w/brown stripe)
5-yellow w/white stripe (white)
6-black (#10 pin black)
7-orange (#11 pink w/black stripe)

2-Blue w/yellow stripe
3-Grey w/ White stripe

8-Yellow w/Brown Stripe
9-Green w/Brown Stripe (12+)

I forgot to answer your other question. I've stated in another post that my gas, temp, and speedo gages don't work. The gas and temp gage twitch when the key is turned to on but the speedo doesn't do a thing. Being that the hazzard light flashes when the left signal is used, I would assume that someone somewhere has crossed a wire. I've read that the radio wires being connected wrong could cause the speedo to quit working. The radio diagram would help, but a complete under dash diagram would be of even more use to me. I appreciate any help you can offer. John

Here are the wiring diagrams for the instrument panel and radio (with amp).
If the wires in the dash are coming from the radio then you do have a major conflict. The only way the radio and the amp should be connected is by a DIN lead.
I would suggest that you disconnect the radio and go back to the start. As some of the wires from the radio are supposed to be connected to the interior lights system this may resolve some of the problems.

I think that this applies to the radios fitted with the Vehicle Speed Sensor which automatically adjust the volume as the car goes faster/slower.I've read that the radio wires being connected wrong could cause the speedo to quit working

I can't find that fuse block in the left kick panel anywhere. I have one behind the ash tray. Is that the same one? I opened the panel under the steering wheel. The 14 pin connector plugged into the back of my radio is the one that was stolen from the amp. The amp wires are all cut and hanging loose. Can I bypass the factory amp but still use the factory radio? Should I just get another 14 pin connector off eBay and connect all of the wires back up? Thanks for your help, I think I'm finally getting somewhere. John

There is only one fuse box which is behind the ashtray. The diagram is used for more than one model/year and it is the 240 that has the fuse block under the left kick panel. Sorry about thatI can't find that fuse block in the left kick panel anywhere
That depends on the radio that you have. As stated earlier there is a 'base' radio and there is the radio with the amp. The base radio has 13 connections. It may help you to decide by comparing the wiring for the 'base' radio. Can I bypass the factory amp but still use the factory radio?
