Tachometer wiring colors?

Post by Freezyeazy1 »

Hey guys I'm looking to replace my tach due to it not working and seeing as I have a standard tranny I'd love to have one. So instead of spending a lot of money on a new instrument panel (being a poor college student) I got a new aftermarket one from a friend for free and would love to install it but I cannot figure out what wires to splice into. I tried looking at wiring diagrams but that's like reading Egyptian to me. The aftermarket tach has the standard red, black, green, and yellow wires. Any help on this matter would be awesome.

I think the RPM input is a white/black wire that goes into pin A-11 on the instrument cluster. The other things you will need are power and ground.

Switched + battery should be a blue/red wire at pin A-18 and ground is a black wire at pin A-17.

If you need key off power it is a red/black wire at pin A-16.

Does this sound like a really bad idea to anyone else?
The tach on this car gets it's signal from the ECU.
Trying to tie a caveman tach into it may smoke it.

I would slowly back away from this concept.

I have my doubts that it will work but hopefully it is buffered to provide isolation.

All of the old school tachs I ever dealt with had a 3 position switch that was marked 4-6-8 and they were driven off the points. I never had one that had a position for a 5 cylinder.
