96 850GLT dash vents ECC

Post by jerryb1961 »

Hi folks.... how big a deal is it to just manually set the vents to either cooling or heating and bypass the ECC's shunts & thermometers? My left side vents are putting out blisteringly hot air, while the ones on the right are outputting cool air. The blower and the AC work fine, but there something wrong with how the air's being routed. I'd just as soon set things to have all air blow cool until the winter, then manually set all of them to blow warm. I closed the two leftmost vents withe the knob, but that increased the hot air flow to the left-center one. I put some tape over that one but enough still leaks out to make the right-center one blow less-than-cold.

I'm already afraid this is not something I can do myself on a Sunday afternoon. The alternative is to just roll the windows down and cut the who system off. I just shelled out $350 to have the heater core replaced. TIA..

And this: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=60660

Without knowing what the codes are, you are not going to fix it.
And it is pin 6, not 5, that is for the ECC.

If I had a larger garage, I could have more Volvos.

Yup, the best place to start is read the codes. From there, you can at least see what error the ECC has stored. Check the rods on the blend doors and make sure they're attached and moving when you change the temperature.

Mysteriously, the ECC started working again a couple of weeks ago, but (there's always a but, isn't there?) BUT, the motor blew up today. More expensive to fix than what the car's worth.

I'm looking at a 1998 S70 that I will probably buy this weekend

You could get a used motor from a junkyard for likely under $30.

Either way, good luck! I’m sure you’ll enjoy the S70!

These are not cars you can economically run paying for all repairs. Every repair will cost more than the cars residual value ( a flawed way of thinking). Unlike most brands, though, the parts supply chain is strong and competitive , and the DIY info is unparalleled.

This, exactly. The intercooler I have coming today cost more than I paid for my car. I don't even want to talk about how much money I have into that thing at this point!

I would suggest you are still a long way short of what I have into my 'R'. This is not a competition I want to win though!!

Good Luck.
